- Q: I am going to be starting college soon and I would like some input to these two engineering majors. I know I want to pick one of these but I dont know which. I love building things but I also love tinkering with computers and technology. I've read that ECE has a better job outlook as well as a better salary. I think I might like ME because of the hands on although i think alot of it is designing on computers.[. I know I have time to decide in college. Any Help/Opinions??
- In terms of jobs, opportunities, money they all are basically equal. The question is what type of problems do you like to solve. I went into Electrical because I aced those chapters in high school physics. Today I solved several problems. I had one phone conference. Help plan a project, work that was to be done, material needed, key people. I made several follow up phone calls to see where key equipment and what calculations were completed. I reviewed a arc flash study, spot checked by hand a few of the computer calculations. Programs a great, but garbage in garbage out. About a month ago I was out in the field, and my friend Chris had a problem. Chris may be a mechanical engineer, but he is a real motor head. Chris is an expert on rebuilding 50 year old electrical equipment like 15kv breakers. This breaker would not open, and it was stuck so you could not unplug it. Chris injected lubricant into the socket, and had the men rotate the coupling by hand so the lubricant (special lubricant that Chris had to specify and buy) would penetrate. The were then able to unplug the breaker for the first time in 30 years. Chris then had to figure out what was wrong with this complex piece of equipment that can interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. It turned out some grommets were worn. Chris replaced the grommets with ones he had specially machined. Chris then had to tune everything up so the breaker could interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. The only other engineers who can do this are old enough to be Chris's dad, or granddad. These are some of the things real engineers do.
- Q: i have problem with my home electrical wiring. the negative and ground pin is live with current even when the power is switched off and when switched on all the three pins are live and most of my electrical equipments are not working. please help?
- Wow. It sounds as though you have lost your neutral and have what is called multiwire circuits in your house. Basically what is happening is you have 120 Volts on both the hot and the neutral/ground of your house. If you most of your equipment isn't working, you really have an issue you need to get looked at. Obviously I'm not standing in your house with a volt meter in my hand so I'm taking your word that the neutral and ground have volts, not current, on them. But if what you say is true then this is the most likely scenario. I strongly recommend you get a professional there quickly.
- Q: examples of electrical equipment in which insulators and conductors are used.and give reasons for their usethxthe one that answers will get 10 points
- insulators are used on wires and places you don't want electricity to flow conductors are used in circuit boards and almost every electrical component. conductors are used to carry the flow of electricity.
- Q: Do electrical equipment work with AC or does the voltage get converted to DC before working anything!! for exampe, if i connect something such as a light bulb directly to an AC outlet, would it work or would it get blown out, why do somethings get blown when using AC
- AC mean alternating current where the positive and negative switch continuously. DC means direct current which there is just one positive and one negative. If you connect a lightbulb to DC or AC it would work since the flow of electricity will work in either direction to power the light. however it all depends what you're using in terms of voltage, watts, etc. if you take an automotive bulb and plugged it into a house out let it would blow. Different components work only for direct current and some only work with alternating current.
- Q: I don't intend to get a job with this but it would be good to know some things about it since everything runs on electricity now.
- do not be lazyread a little about electronic troubleshooting like . tracing voltage .tracing currenttracing waveform with oscilloscope. then start repairing electronic boardssurely you will earn more money
- Q: I want to run an appliance that uses DC 5V 2.5A at 6 watts consumption using an adapter from the cigarette lighter socket. I have a standard 12v car battery in the small car. Do i need to get a bigger battery/more batteries, special alternator, or something else to run this appliance permanently? Is there an online calculator to help me work out how much battery power i need? Many Thanks to all answerers.
- as was said, 5 volts at 2.5 amps is 12 watts, not 6. But either way, that is a small amount of power for a car battery. Typical batteries have a capacity of about 1000 watt-hours, so the 12 watt load would work for 80 hours, although I'd limit it to well less than 40 for safety. With the engine running, there is no problem, you can run it as long as you want. It's when you have a load of 50 amps or more when you have to worry about a second battery, etc. .
- Q: If the sprinklers go off and hit electrical equipment like computers would an electrical fire start and would the water still coming out the sprinklers only make this fire worse.
- It might make the computers short out, and possibly a fire. The school would most likely just turn off the electricity to the school. I wouldn't make them go off if I were you though.
- Q: direct tv came to the house we just moved into and the power went out when he was hooking up a reciever and turns out all our outlets are messed up except two. one is completely dead. one was red on his tester thing and he said that is dangerous--forgot what he said about it and all the other are open ground i guess, and the fuse keeps blowing. is there any way to fix it without an electrician??? my husband knows some electrical stuff thanks
- particularly circumstances quite a few retailers would be secure utilising a GFI retailers further down the line, probably even in yet another room. a stable place to start would be to have your spouse stay interior the room with the lamp plugged in, and flow around the residing house tripping, and resetting all of the GFCI retailers. If the sunshine is going on then you incredibly've remoted the GFCI outlet that's preserving that wall. If it journeys returned, you have the two a defective GFI outlet, some undesirable plugs, or a short someplace interior the line. definite it is conceivable for quite a few retailers to alter into cracked or broken interior and end working. in case you have the talents to do it, start up checking the wires interior the opening for skill utilising a volt meter. in case you have skill yet no gentle, then the opening is undesirable. **** in case you're uncertain of what you're doing, call an electrician****
- Q: I have to declare a major in my schools engineering program at the end of this semester, and I was wondering what type of working enviroments I would probably be in with either major and a bachelors/masters degree? What are the jobs like in each major? Desk/factory/lab etc? I know there are lots of options in each program, but what are most of the jobs in each respective industry like? Thanks!
- There are more USA jobs in electrical engineering than chemical engineers (see the source below) which may explain why I don't see that many chemical engineers. The few people I know who where chemist or chemical engineer moved into others fields. The one exception was a friend in college that I loss touch. Last I heard he working in production. All the EE that I know work in desk or lab work with occasional developmental testing of equipment in the field.
