Q: I have some basic questions about SketchUP and AutoCAD.I'm totally new to 3D software and was planning to enroll in an AutoCADcourse before I found SketchUP and found out some self training with thefree tutorials might give me some good handicap before I go to the more advanced stage. My question is : Is it possible to transfer without any issue (bugs, etc.) a 3D file from SketchUP to Autocad and continue the work in AutoCAD, or vice-versa?What would be the best way for someone like me (that knows almost nothing) to get started?andwhat would be the best figures to start drawing for someone who eventually plans to design mainly electrical heavy equipments? Thanks a lot.
Yes You can I do this all the time. But Sketchup is not very good for accurate drafting. I prefer doing 3D in Auto CAD and then import it in sketchup and continue working there. you concentrate on Auto CAD. bcos, in your line of work, precision is important. Electrical Equipments cannot be guess work. so, do 2d drawings for your product, then convert it into 3d using Extrudes and booleans. Once you are through with that, take it into sketchup (I normally trake it into 3ds max) and do your presentation there. by the way I am an architect.but i dont think our lines are very different in the sense of drafting. see ya PS. there are some possible issues while importing from sketchup TO Auto CAD. I wouldnt call them BUGS, but still, its not always very comfortable when u r dealing with a large file. its same for any software thats compatible with auto CAD
Q: I have a full-time job but would like to dabble in residential electrical work for friends and family. What would I need to do? I would like some kind of formal license and training but don't want to go back to school or commit to any long-term programs. This is in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts Department of Public Safety requires that only licensed electricians can work for hire on electrical equipment, wiring, conduits, motors, etc. To get a license you will be required to work 4000 hours under a licensed Class A or C electrician and complete an extensive training course. Also, you will be required to take and pass an exam. After all that you are required to take 25 hours of certified training every two years. This will be or already has been increased. To work on CCTV, Burglar alarm systems, or Access Control systems a S license is required. If you don't get paid you still have to worry about the exposure and getting insurance to cover this exposure would be impossible if not licensed.
Q: If it is, why?
A house is usually grounded through its piping systems that have generous contact with the damp earth, resulting in negligible resistance. An AC circuit alternately pushes electrons into the earth and draws them back out (60 times a second) for each separate phase similar to the power generation station. Electrons need not travel from power station to house and back full cycle. A separate ground wire (cable) would be required if the earth's resistance resulted in appreciable power losses.
Q: all electrical equipment goes dead in car. If disconnect battery, then again appears to have electrical power, no fuses in panel or battery relay blown, but ignition clicks once and all electrical out again in car and starter does not engage.
Sounds like the ground cable is loose.

If you like physics, I would look into mechanical.
Q: I want to run an appliance that uses DC 5V 2.5A at 6 watts consumption using an adapter from the cigarette lighter socket. I have a standard 12v car battery in the small car. Do i need to get a bigger battery/more batteries, special alternator, or something else to run this appliance permanently? Is there an online calculator to help me work out how much battery power i need? Many Thanks to all answerers.
as was said, 5 volts at 2.5 amps is 12 watts, not 6. But either way, that is a small amount of power for a car battery. Typical batteries have a capacity of about 1000 watt-hours, so the 12 watt load would work for 80 hours, although I'd limit it to well less than 40 for safety. With the engine running, there is no problem, you can run it as long as you want. It's when you have a load of 50 amps or more when you have to worry about a second battery, etc. .
Q: I have an electrical equipment(Its quite old. aybe about 25 years old)These are the ratings:Input : AC 120 V 60 HzOutput : DC9V - 850mAI live in SIngapore which has a power input of 240VMy step down transformer/converter specsMaximum power it can convert is 230 watts
DC9V @ 850mA is 7.65 watts. Your stepdown transformer can handle 230 watts so a measly 7.65 watts is no problem for it. Use it with confidence. Or buy a replacement AC adapter with an input of 240vAC, output of 9vDC for a lot cheaper. As long as the adapter output is rated for 850mA or higher, it will be good. (Make sure the polarity is correct, as well as the physical fit of the coaxial connector.)
Q: I wanted to buy electrical products in wholesale from China. I know some companies but to explore more i wanted to know which city can i find electrical products like bulbs, fluorescent tubes, chandeliers, spotlight lighting fixtures.I wont mind if there are different cities each for different products. One more thing i have never been to China. And please don't answer by telling to contact so and so personThank you
Dongguan City and Shenzhen City in Guangdong Province of China.
Q: I have a school project (Construction management) that involves the estimating of the electrical cost for a building addition. I can do the fixture counts, equipment hook ups, box counts, switches and etc. I cant figure out how much wiring would be involved. from the blueprints, is there a way to measure (estimate) the lf of wiring? this is a school building so there are mostly medsize room and hallways. any help would be great. I remember something about the homerun count from when i was a laborer, but could i figure 1 line around the room with a line for fixtures or something like that. doesnt have to be perfect by any means.
One way to go would be to identify the circuits in each room. Measure distance between outlets switches , add 12 for each outlet or fixture each 90deg turn if wire is to be run in conduit. If you have some idea of route wiring will take, account for going up over cielings or under floors to the home run to the service panel for each circuit , allow for a 6' tail at breaker location then add 10%. Assuming everything will take (or might be required to take ) perimeter routes w/ 90deg turns dressing the conduit on walls or racks you should be be safe. Some est runs will be long some short , but it evens out. Might be a good idea to show how you arrived at estimate on your worksheet. Might not be the only way to estimate , but it shows you gave it some thought. Best regards
Q: (without using any connection wires)? I frequently need to plug existing electrical equipment in places where there is no power outlet I have to use clumsy long tailed electrical extension plug that hinders free movement ? Short of using a battery in the equipment how to connect the power junction points (earth live neutral to an existing electrical power outlet using nothing but air in between)?
Research is going on Wireless transmission of electricity in IIT, Madras, India. This will make considerable changes in how the electricity is transmitted in future certainly now, there is no way to transmit electricity wirelessly, you need to wait for some more years.
