- I studied in in university - it's contemporary to when it was written, so it may as well be set in 1893. Crane was in his early 20's when he wrote it. He was addressing a societal issues of the day, particularly living in the slums of New York and the shift in American culture/economy from primarily agricultural to industrial. It addressed poverty, disaease, social ills and the dreariness of poor city life. The book was quite controversial when it first came out.

- Q: Today, my boyfriend surprised me with an origami bird he'd made for me the night before, just for no reason. He told me he'd tried to make a crane but it got to be to complicated. I thought an was an incredibly sweet gesture, and I thanked him thoroughly. I was wondering if it would be nice to give him an origami something back? I found a really easy video on how to make cranes and I made one, but I don't want it to seem like I'm trying to show him up, I just want to show my gratitude. Would it be best to give him the crane, give him a different origami animal, or just let the whole thing go? Sorry if it seems like I'm over thinking this, I just really like him :)

- Q: What do lattice boom and hydraulic boom in cranes mean?
- LATTICE BOOM: See first link. This is where the boom (the portion used to support the load) is made like a lattice ... i.e. interconnected trusses and girders. The cables for lifting the load are run from the base of the boom to the load over pulleys/gears located at the boom's tip. The boom itself is NOT adjustable in length or in angle. HYDRAULIC BOOM: See second link. This crane uses hydraulics to adjust either the length of the boom, or the angle at which the boom joints intersect. It looks more like a single beam construction, although its probably closer to a tube type design (hydraulics may be inside or outside the arm). The load is raised/lowered by cables operating at the end of the boom ... not necessarily tied back to the bottom of the boom.
