- Q: A few years ago, my college decided to take down two multilevel dormitories. The demolition company decided to take it down piecemeal with a wrecking ball. The wrecking ball was attached to the crane via a very large tire (just the rubber part, not the inflatable part). I have seen this done on normal cranes and other wrecking balls on TV and was wondering if any professional construction people out there know why they would do this as to me, a guy not in the construction/demolition business, think that might be a bit unsafe.

The strands are interlaced sometime, and other times I see them clamped together. It would seem important to protect those joints. I do not know all of the crane business terminology, but that would be the gist of it.

- I hate them too! They are the only animals I don't like. I know they are harmless, but they creep me out - as you say, they just fly at you and try to dangle all those horrible long spindly legs on your face, yuk!! I personally find the best way to get rid of them is to whack them with a rolled up newspaper or magazine. By the way, My Evil Twin is mistaken about their feeding habits. Crane flies do not eat mosquitoes - most do not eat at all in their adult form, since they only live a day or a couple of days at most. They simply mate and then die. If they do feed at all, it's just sipping some nectar from flowers. They do not have mouthparts capable of eating other insects.

- I am not sure what you mean here. Crane flies are not venomous, they do not possess venom nor are in fact able to break human skin by biting. If you mean are they poisonous if ingested, that all depends upon which substances are present on or in its body...
