- Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
- Most solar lamps use a single .2V nicd or nimh battery as a back-up supply, so they should be able to generate at least .5V in full sun to allow charging of the battery (you can verify the voltage of a single panel with your DMM) If you have two of these panels, I wouldn't expect them to make more than approximately 3V. The proper connection would be a series connection where the negative of one panel connects to the positive of the other and the remaining positive and negative wires become the outputs. Try this connection and measure again with your multimeter set to DCV and the panels in full sun. If the voltage is not high enough, add a third panel wired with its positive lead to the remaining negative of the first two. This should bring your voltage up another 50 percent. When you wire the panels positive to positive, negative to negative as you already have, voltage will be that of one panel, but current output will double (more amps) If you have many of these panels, you could combine series and parallel wiring to increase voltage and current.
- Q: The average solar panel produces 0% of the energy that is put into it. What is happening to the other 90%? Is it being reflected or is it being obsorbed by materials that are not a part of the solar cell? Is it possible to one day have near 00% efficient solar cell technology?
- Mainly due to reflection (micro-structuring of the surface helps here), incorrect wavelength of the light (the panel is only sensitive to a certain wavelength range) and heating of the panel (due to the incident light/thermal radiation). The remainder is either reflected or absorbed by the cell and re-emitted as heat. Absorption by e.g. the glass panel is slight (a few %), as is absorption/reflection by the necessary surface contacts (again, a few %). Higher efficiency is possible, but brings its own drawbacks (like higher cost). You could now go into two directions: - high efficiency cells/panels with (likely) higher cost and complexity for mounting (like lens or mirror based systems, aka concentrator systems, that increase the light level on the cells in order to increase efficiency) - low cost systems (cheap as dirt) that will allow you to cover every surface of a building, efficiency is less important if you can compensate by a much larger covered area As to the efficiency limit: there is a theoretical limit (from thermodynamics - don't ask me how or why) in the range of 30...40%, depending on which publication you want to believe in.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in areas with frequent power outages?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed in areas with frequent power outages. In fact, solar panels can be a great solution to mitigate the impact of power outages as they generate electricity from sunlight, reducing reliance on the grid. Additionally, with the integration of energy storage systems, solar panels can store excess energy produced during the day and provide backup power during outages, ensuring a continuous power supply.
- Q: Can solar panels be used for powering outdoor lighting?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power outdoor lighting. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be stored in batteries and used to power outdoor lights during nighttime. This allows for cost-effective and environmentally friendly outdoor lighting solutions.
- Q: How do solar panels impact the roofing material's lifespan?
- Solar panels can actually extend the lifespan of roofing materials. They act as a protective layer, shielding the roof from various weather elements like UV rays, hail, and rain, which can cause damage over time. Additionally, solar panels can help regulate the temperature of the roof, preventing excessive heat buildup that can accelerate the degradation of roofing materials.
- Q: can solar panels have glass between the panels and the sun?
- As above, but also make sure the panels you use will still produce if partially shaded. Some older panels will quit producing if you so much as put your hand over a small portion of it. Newer ones don't do this but are more expensive. As you may need more panel area to produce enough energy to fill a battery (if that is how you go) make sure you have the room/roof area for additional panels.
- Q: I hooked up a 2V solar panel to a small relay. The relay switches at 9V. When I have light shining on the panel it puts out aorund 3-4V, but when I hook it up directly to the relay it drops to V and doesn't switch the relay. Why? and How do I fix it?-2V Mono-Crystalline Solar Panel -JWD 7 4 reed relay
- I suspect the voltage is OK but the amount of current the solar cell is capable of delivering is less than the relay coil needs to operate. The current the relay tries to draw overloads the PV. You need to add additional PVs in parallel to operated the relay coil. An alternative is to use a low current draw relay coil or use a transistor switch. Hope this helps, NewtonLaw
- Q: Interested to know if it is possible to install Solar Panels to run my Jacuzzi?Don't want to do the whole house just the jacuzzi anybody have any ideas Thanks
- yes you have to install an inverter to convert DC to AC....and a battery pack if you want to use jacuzzi on a cloudy day or at night
- Q: when building a solar panel should the diode be on the positive or negative sidelittle more detail i just built a solar panel and im running it to a grid tie converter should i put diodes in if i add another panel or are they only for battery systems?
- the blocking diode goes on the positive side
- Q: I need to know where I can buy the parts or find them as scrap to make my own solar panels. Is there a cheap way of buying the panels or can I make them myself.
- You can buy a box broken cells and solder them together and save big bucks.
