Some connections are made using grooved fittings like Victaulic couplings. Tubing can be welded but the most common connection is a soldered slip on fitting or a fitting made specifically for tubing. Some such fitting are flared, others use a ferrol (sp?) or an o-ring or similar elastomer gasket.

Threads on pipe have an OD to suit the pipe, the size of which is its nominal bore. 1/4 pipe has an approximate OD of 1/2, therefore. When used on pipe, the die cuts a tapered thread, not parallel. The mating tap, therefore, is approx. 1/2 OD. They are available in both taper and parallel threads. 1/4 UNF is 1/4 outside diameter. It is a screw thread. So of course it only talks of pitch and depth, the OD is 1/4! You don't tap pipes. You only tap pipe FITTINGS. As above, if the OD of the UNF is 1/4, there is NO WAY you could tap ANY hole that is 1/2 or 1 diameter, and never in a pipe.

I had some of the same problems when playing college ball, and I simply started doing more exercises to work on my grip and finger strength to solve it. Start by doing forearm strengthening lifts at the gym. Forearm curls and forearm rotations will be a great addition to your bicep workout. Static hanging on pull up bars is another great way to build up your grip, which will in turn strengthen your fingers - do a chin up and hold until COMPLETE muscle failure. Doing finger pushups also will help a great deal, and as you get stronger, you can lessen the number of fingers you use. Also those grip strengthener/forearm exercisers that you can buy will help out. Doing these will solve your problem long term, and prevent pesky and nagging injuries. In the mean time, taping your fingers will help more than any gloves. If necessary, reapply tape during your breaks. Taping and wearing a decent glove will help as well, but as I said, this will be a short term solution, and could lead to a more serious injury. Others have mentioned good glove brands, but if I were you, I'd go look for yourself before you buy any - find something that fits and feels good on you, not something someone else claims to be the best.
