Yes steel is a great material. It will be on the of the heavier side than aluminum depending on how well made the made the bike. I believe that steel is will definitely last a LONG time with the correct maintenance. Just keep it out of rain and every now and then strip down the bike and go through a thorough clean

The most common was bronze, which was the strongest material that could be cast, at least until the industrial revolution. Until that time, furnaces which could reach temperatures hot enough to melt steel did not exist. The only way to work with steel would have been forging, which means hammering it into shape while red-rot.
