Q: What are the advantages of using solar panels?
There are several advantages of using solar panels. Firstly, solar panels harness energy from the sun, which is a renewable source of power, making it environmentally friendly. They produce clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future. Solar panels also provide independence from the grid, allowing homeowners to generate their own electricity and potentially save on energy bills. Additionally, solar panels require minimal maintenance, have a long lifespan, and can increase the value of a property.
Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of insect activity?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of insect activity. While insects may occasionally land on the surface of the panels, they do not pose a significant threat to the overall performance or lifespan of the system. Additionally, solar panels are designed to be durable and can withstand exposure to various environmental conditions, including insect activity.
Q: If a solar panel (using 36 3x6 solar cells) puts out 60 watts, how many panels would I need (for a house) if I use a max of 2300 kWh in a month? I checked my electric usage for the past 2 years and the kWh is usually lower but I wanted to use the most kWh used (2300) for my question. Thanks!

Q: i attached a usb charger to my solar panel(it has an output of about .2 volts) but i read on my multimeter its only using about 8 volts however on the conventional wall charger that i use to charge it has an output of about 5. volts.... i believe that my mp3 player is not charging it does not display the charging icon when it is on or off ....is this becuase the output is higher ? do i need to install a volt dropping diode to prevent it from putting to much energy at once? (my mp3 charges fine on the wall charger but does not seem to respond to the solar panel so it the circuits are fine....)
Have okorder . This could undoubtedly assist person!
Q: My project needs to build a thermal solar panel that would be used as a demonstrational rig. The dimensions i am allowed do not allow me to use a normal thermal solar panel so i have decided to use the heat exchanger from the back of a fridge. Although this is possible to use what equation would i use to prove the power of the sun would actually heat up the water. More importantly when the rig is demonstrated to students, they will need to be able to determine if the raise in temperature given by the thermometers is what should be given. Variables of the rig will include: Angle of the panel, Light intensity, Direction of panel, and more importantly the flow rate of the water travelling through the pipes. What equation includes those variables (change in temperature, flow rate) and would allow me to incorporate the angle of the panel. The light source would be a lamp so i would also need to know how much of the energy from the lamp is actually being used by the panel?
solar panels don't store energy, they only generate it. If you want to store energy you need a battery bank of some kind to get you through the night and anytime the sun isn't shining. If you have a little extra in the budget you might look at a geothermal system for your home's heating and cooling needs. They're highly efficient systems and you can supplement however you like. Whatever you do, though I hope you have a good building envelope in place already. Solar panels are cool, but if you have a leaky house, you're still not getting the best out of your panels. Do the more mundane stuff first. Insulation, windows, and weather-tight doors.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on a canopy or pergola?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on a canopy or pergola. In fact, these structures can provide an ideal location for solar panel installation as they are often situated in areas with good sun exposure. By placing solar panels on canopies or pergolas, you can maximize the use of available space while also providing shade and protection from the elements.
Q: Photo-Voltaic solar panels are very expensive. Most of a home's energy needs are for heating water, heating and air-conditioning. All of these can be met with thermal solar collectors which are much less expensive. The thermal solar panels would heat water stored in a hot water tank which then can be used as hot water, to heat the home, or as the heat source to a Lithium Bromide Absorption chiller to air-condition a home. With the base line needs met without expensive panels and without inefficient energy conversions, only a small Photo-Voltaic array would be needed for the remaining power needs and since those needs are variable, there would still be power to sell to the grid.
Just read some of the other posts and I am surprised at the answers. Solar thermal systems typically have a payback of less than seven years on residential system without the tax break. A complete system can be installed for about 5k or less. Compare that to 20k or more for PV with a fifteen to twenty year pay off. Each home and area is different so a site evaluation must be done for exact figures and pay offs. I am going off my own experience in my above statements Flat panel collectors work well in most areas for DHW. Evacuated tubes often run too hot which works well for some applications or high usage. Heating water is the single greatest energy usage other than space heating and cooling. It often surpasses the two above systems based on its widespread usage(every houshold in USA has one) and its the amount it is used(24/7@365) The amount of energy spent to heat water is by order of magnitude the greatest number out there. Having a solar thermal system providing hot water for a average American household is equivalent to taking 40,000 miles off the freeway in a car every year. The BTU's required to heat the water is huge. So why is this more developed cheaper and more efficient technology behind PV in awareness? Natural Gas the number one choice for heating water is cheap. It's by product is invisible and misunderstood. What I find fascinating is if you look at the increase in Natural Gas vs Electricity you will be surprised by how much it has jumped in the last seven years. It is not talked about nearly as much as electricity It does not get the same level of press that PV does. So in short the answer is cheap Natural Gas prices and public perception of this product have kept it off the list of many that are turning toward the green trend. It is less sexy than watching your meter spin backwards. It is the best improvement at the best cost except for conservation which is and was the most cost effective energy saving that can be employed
Q: There are so many solar panels and kits it is very confusing. I need to know what exactly I would need if I had an underground home with no electricity. I want to be totally off the grid with solar power. Someone please explain to me in simple terms what exactly I need. Maybe give me a link to the right kit for me. Also are they easy to install? Are there instructions that I need to download?Thank you
You okorder ... Depending on your needs, you may have to have these customized for your home, but they at least give you an idea of what's involved.
Q: DIY, buying solar panels, room is barely 200 sq. ft. have a 5000 btu air conditioner, how many watts do I need, thinking of buying 75 watt solar panels, have space on the roof.

Q: I wanna start going green, you know like solar panels, wind turbines, etc. but where I live the companies that install the free solar panels in exchange for the subsidiaries aren't available. To start off I was just looking for a single panel I could drill into my roof and wire it to an outlet just for small thinks like charging my phone and a fan maybe. If anybody can understand my crazy idea please answer with links to where I can find these things. Thanks!
