I live in CA.: Hey Patrick, I was formerly a tower crane erector out of Washington DC. BUt, to yor question, I wold highly recommend you go to your town's Operator engineers Union Hall and inquire as to the qualifications and requirements to enroll in their apprenticeship program. Yes you will have to go thru the apprenticeship program. A tower crane operator is a coveted job among operators... You have to learn to hold your 'P for long periods as well as have great depth perception You coming out of the service, you should be given some preference Good luck

That will vary by whether it is a very long and slender tall crane or a shorter heavy duty for considerable loads. It may even vary depending on whether the manufacturer has as a goal an extra light weight unit using more expensive stronger steel or is willing to use thicker walls to use more ordinary steel. That is what engineers are for.

The cables of the crane pass over pulley. That's one simple machine right there. In addition, one that not everybody would think is a lever. On the back of the crane, there is a huge weight. The purpose of this is to compensate for what is being picked up at the front of the crane. Having a very heavy weight on the back of the crane allows a load to be picked up far forward at the front of the crane. Otherwise, it would topple over and people would die. And that would be bad.
