- I believe what you refer to is called PEX. There are other trade names as well, but this is what I use. The piping itself will contract when thawed and will (has not yet) not leak. You should be aware that the piping is supposed to be freeze resistant, but the brass fittings used for the connections are NOT. Find some comfort in the fact that It is extremely unlikely that the fitting will freeze and crack, given the amount of flexing in the PEX piping. Also know that this type of piping is not designed to be used outdoors or where sunlight may contact it. The components will breakdown leading to failure.
