You can not do this untill engine has heads, cam, lifters, rockers on it. So your friend just telling you it needs longer is a screw up. The ONLY times you need longer pushrods is when you deck the block, mill the heads, go to a small base circle cam, or change head design. The lift of the cam has very little, to nothing to do with pushrod lenght. 99.9% sure your major prob here is the pushrods are too long. Just be glad your studs are weak and its breaking them, rather than pushing a hole through the lifters. Easy way to tell if pushrods are right lenght is to.. Pull rocker arm off, wipe valve stem tip clean, color the whole tip with a sharpie marker, put rocker arm back on and turn engine over by hand 2 rounds. Pull rocker arm back off, and look at the wittness marked that rubbed the marker off. You want the mark to be dead center. If mark is towards the header side of valve steem.. Push rods are too long.. If mark is towards intake manifold side of tip, then pushrods are too short. Heres some info on what I was running and needed. 71 350, 66 327 heads, .015 thick gaskets, .484/.512 lift hyd. cam.. Needed stock 7.8 long push rods My new combo, 71 350 block 0 decked, .038 thick gaskets, brodix alum IK200 heads, .100 longer valves, .570/.579 lift solid cam.. Needed 8.150 pushrods My dad's.. 69 327, Brodix IK180 heads, stock decks, .040 gaskets, .496:/.515 lift hyd cam, needed 7.900 pushrods Most all combos with flat tappet cams, factory type heads, and stock deck height will need a 7.8 to 7.850 push rods
