Q: We bought a house that has a fully covered sunroom with large glass windows and metal framing. Right now i have ugly green caret in there, but i want tiles. Can i tile over a flat cement surface. It gets below freezing in the winter time(NE Ohio) and i want to make sure that it could withstand some water.: Consider ceramic and porcelain tiles – both are excellent, time-honored flooring materials. They are very strong, extremely durable, and highly resistant to stains.There really isn't much difference between porcelain and ceramic now In general a cement or concrete subfloor is the best surface for installing ceramic tile. However, the concrete floor needs to be flat and level and free from any type of chemicals that could prevent a proper bonding between the ceramic tile and the concrete surface. I install custom high-end tiles and I retailed such for many years. I have to say... just about every answer to this quesiton that I have read thus far is incorrect. If you do choose to use a glass mosaic tile, be sure and use one that is manufactured by a reputable company. I recommend Bisazza... IT IS GLASS, sold in the US, and its found in many European countries in social areas where people actually walk! Anotherwards, it is very durable, difficult to scratch and when installed correctly, nearly impossible to break. Also, with a glass mosaic tile, you want to be sure and use an epoxy grout. These grouts are much more difficult to install but will not stain, fade, or change color... EVER. As for cons... the first would be price. Bisazza starts at $8.00 a sq and that would be for a very basic looking glass mosaic tile. Also, if you're paying for the installation, contractors do get more money for installing glass... you need an installer that has experience installing glass (not just ceramic tile)... very important. Lastly, most contractors also get more money for installing the epoxy grouts... but whether you use glass or any other kind of tile on a COUNTER TOP, make sure you use epoxy grout so you don' t ever have to worry about stains and maintenance of your grout. I say if that's what you want... pay for it and do it. Tile installations are already costly and it's worth paying for what you want. I just can't stress enough that you want to use good material, a tile setter that is well-experienced working with glass, and an epoxy grout. Good Luck

Q: Do they resist stains, scratches/nicks and does it protect it from fading and making it easier to clean?The tiles will be going in my kitchen and pantry.Are unglazed tiles, ideal for high-traffic areas?: for a kitchen, a glazed tile might be too slick, so be careful what type of glazed surface you choose. steer clear of any tile that has a mirror finish. if you can see your face in the glaze at a certain angle, its not suitable for a kitchen! when it gets wet it will be too slippery. a glazed tile can be easier to clean than an unglazed tile. depending on the type of glazed tile, scratches can be a problem. unglazed tiles can have a rougher surface, which helps in the slip factor, but might be tougher to clean. go to your local tile distributor and look around. ask the sales rep; tell them where the tiles are going to be installed. they can give you some good ideas. consider a porcelain tile. they can be smooth as well as textured, generally are easy to clean, and VERY durable for high traffic areas. i've never seen any type of tile fade, so i can't help you out there. most tiles won't suck in staining liquids, like grape juice, etc, so unless you chose a marble or natural stone, i wouldn't worry about that. good luck!

Q: best way to install floor 12inch by 12 inch floor tile: First you decide if you want a seam or a row of tiles in the middle. Make sure the floor is clean and without divots (fill in any holes). Drop a chalk line down the center of the room and lay a row of tiles dry (no stick) along the line to see how they look. You don't want one end to leave a sliver and the other end to leave almost a full tile - try to balance the ends that have to be cut. Now dry-lay a perpendicular row from the center to check the ends going across the room. Lay a full tile or its edge down on the chalk line. This first tile will be used to orient all your tiles so make sure you're satisfied with the placement. Then lay a whole permanent row of full tiles down the center. Now you have to decide if you want the tiles layed side by side or brick wall pattern. Next lay the perpendicular row down permanently. Now all you have to do is fill in the quadrants as far as you can go with full tiles. After all your full tiles are down, it's the cut ones that remain. Slide a full tile in place up to the wall and mark where you have to cut. Peel and stick tiles usually can be cut with a sheetrock knife and a metal straight edge or a good pair of shears. Some of the cuts can be tricky - I can't see them so you'll have to muddle through.

(I realize it rather depends on where the fixtures fall within the tile-- but if I don‘t need to buy both, I won‘t waste my money. )Thanks!: If you are trying to use floor tile on the walls, I would go to a tile store and have them make the cuts you need (use a grease pencil to mark the tiles) the two methods described in the first two answers can help you. but if you have ever tried to cut floor tile with one of those hacksaw tile blades you would know that it is VERY DIFFICULT, wall tile cuts no problem but floor tile is much tougher. also if you know where they were purchased they may cut them for you for free.
