- Q: Our kitchen has vinyl tile squares from the 70‘s for the floor. Underneath that is terrazzo (sp?) and nothing else. They are proving to be a massive pain in the butt to remove so I was wondering if we even really need to. They are very thin and very stuck. Can we just skip tearing them out and go ahead with the new ceramic tile install?
- Even the thinnest vinyl tiles will allow some flexing will cause the tiles to pop off. You might be able to lay some cement backing board on the vinyl, you're going to have to put it down anyway.
- Q: i have tiles in my bathroom witch are painted(not me was like that wen i moved in) was wondering if i cud wallpaper or tile over them
- Well i would highly recomend not tileing over tile. It would be harder to replace over all and im not sure if its code
- Q: Ok so our bathroom is old and crappy and the faucet in the shower always come off. I was taking a shower and when i went to put back the body wash it fell and must have landed on the faucet and the faucet came off and two tiles along with it. The tiles are broken into little pieces. My mom is gonna be mad but it wasn‘t even my fault im so scared =(
- confirm to word it wisely once you tell your mom: the faucet fell and pulled off 2 tiles. whether you dropped the physique wash on the faucet (and you're not sure which you probably did; each and every from time to time the faucet merely comes off), you probably did no longer do something incorrect. It grew to become into an twist of destiny, and completely commonplace considering physique wash is meant to make your hands slippery! for sure it is going to fall often times--that's why it relatively is in a plastic bottle. it relatively is obtrusive the faucet and tiles want paintings. no person has executed something approximately it so some distance, the two considering you're all procrastinating, or because of the fact it relatively is a apartment residing house and no-one desires to take a place funds in maintenance. there is an old asserting that a stitch in time, saves 9. In different words, whilst some thing desires fixing, the longer you wait, the bigger and worse the interest will become. in case you hire your place, your mom ought to record the difficulty to the owner and ask to have it fastened.
- Q: To remoe the old wall tiles between kitchen cabinet takes a lot of time or may damage the sheetrock behind it, can I install granite or new tiles on top of it. Appreciate for any input
- I think you would just have to add a level surface between the two.
- Q: How do you use tiles? I‘m sure it‘s easy, but I don‘t know how to use them yet. They look pretty complex. Thanks. I appreciate it.

- Q: The grout in my bathroom is cracking bad and i just had it installed a little over a year ago. I called a different tile guy to look at it and tell me why its cracking. So im trying to figure out who riped me off or whos trying to rip me off. this new tile guy said the grout is cracking because the other tile guy didnt pull the old vinyl up. I remember the other tile guy told me that the vinyl was my moisture barrier so i didnt need anything put on the floor other than the glue ( or whatever you call it) So this new tile guy is saying thats the reason why my grout is cracking because he needed to pull up the old vinyl and the grout would continue to crack until that was done. So that means i need my whole floor re-done with new tile.....so is this new tile guy telling me the truth. Can you install tile over vinyl?
- Installing tile over anything that can possibly move around underneath it is a mistake. My bathroom tile grout is breaking up only in one place on the floor - where the joint is on the concrete board backing. It was apparently not fastened down in enough places to keep the two sections of board from moving.
- Q: I‘m installing a kitchen back splash of 1 x 1 glass tile. Right now there is drywall where the tile will be. I‘ve read that it is better to use cement backing board as a substrate. Is this really necessary or can I just use thin-set to mount the tile directly to the drywall and then grout as usual? Thanks for your help!
- Drywall is a suitable substrate for the glass tile. You want to make sure that the drywall is clean, wipe it down with mineral spirits. Next you will want to mark a level line. 1 glass tiles are fairly heavy when mounted on a 12 mesh sheet, and will tend to sag. This level line will be the top mark of your lower sheet. After you have your line either drawn or chalked, you will want to use a glass tile specific mortar, such as Mapei Adesilex P10. This is a non sagging mortar with a bright white color to allow the glass color to pop. Be sure to follow the mixing instruction to get the best performance, and only mix as much as you can use in a short period of time. Glass tiles are great for backsplashes because of the ease of maintenance, so make sure to use a grout that give you the same performance. Mapei has Opticolor grouts which are stain-free, but offer the same installation as regular grout. Last bit of advice is to be patient, work at your own pace, and step back every other sheet to make sure it looks good as you go.
- Q: Ok my room has asbestos on the vynil tile floor and it‘s in good condition. I‘m trying to put a carpet on top of the floor is it possible without removing the tile? Home Depot wants me to remove it before they install the carpet.
- I wouldn't remove it. The asbestos in vinyl tile won't hurt you until you start scraping and breaking it up. Just have them install it over the tiles. There should be no problem with that. If the idiots at HD give you a hard time, go somewhere else (which is your best bet from the HD horror stories I've read about online). Note: Asbestos products were used into the mid 70s, so if your house is older than 1960 doesn't mean you don't have asbestos tiles.
- Q: We are in the process of buying a Fannie Mae home which is in very good condition. We did however find a hairline crack on about 6 of the 12 x 12 tiles in the master bathroom floor. The Home Inspector said there are no signs of foundation problems on the outside of the home. He said because we live in Texas the ground settles and expands and this could have caused the crack. Because there are no signs of foundation troubles on the outside of the home as long as we water the foundation we shouldn‘t have any problems. There is also a door that closes on it‘s own which indicates there could be a crack? However it‘s just one door out of about 12. Should we be worried or does the inspector know what he‘s talking about.
- The inspector knows some what what he s talking about. Movement like this can cause tile to crack but in most cases the cracks will run in a fairly straight line. Are the tiles that way? Or are they here and there? If the are more in a random pattern, tiles my be loose , the workmanship was poor and thin set wasn t applied right or thin set was to wet , dry or possibly had skinned over before tile was set. There are easy ways to tell if the tiles are loose to see if thats the problem. The door shouldn t be a problem to fix so I would be more concerned with the tiles. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.
- Q: im going to tile the floor next weekend with 16x16 ceramic tile, and i could use some advice2 questions actually...1. when i lay my backerboard, and tape the staggered seams, do i keep that thinset over the tape very thin? im afraid of a hump in the floor when i go to lay tile.2. how much pressure do i apply when seting the tiles in the thinset? ive seen websites that show very little pressure..and some that show alot of pressure. does it need to float on the thinset or mash it down in the thinset. i just want this to turn out good...its my 1st time, and ive done alot of research, but the information varies from person to person. any added advice or tips on this project would be greatly appreciated.
- There is a really neat product called anti-fracture membrane available at most tile stores or in the tile section at home depot. The product is applied with a roller over your substrate whether concrete or backer board. A couple coats will prevent cracks from telegraphing up through your floor and prevent moisture from migrating up or down. Thinset is applied directly over the membrane. At work we trowell the thinset as flat as possible, no more than 1/2 thick and no more than 1/4 high. We also apply thinset to the back of the tile to insure a good bond. You shouldn't have to press the tile down very hard. Apply firm and even pressure to the tile pressing it down to your line. You can tap lightly on the tile to check for voids, you can hear if it is hollow. If you have to press really hard or if lots of thinset squeezes up between the tiles use less thinset. It can be frustrating at first but after a few tiles you should get the hang of it. A bucket of clean water and a sponge are helpful as even the best of us get a little thinset on the tile. good luck
