Q:It‘s been a while since I have done tile, but I remember we used to use sheetrock to cover the floor or for back splash wall, however I don‘t remember what it was used for. Is there special cases when you need to use it or do I need to use it every time? What is the purpose to use the sheetrock? Please help. Thanks.
You never use a sheetrock to do tile. Only as a normal wall covering to be painted in a non wet area such as a back splash or a wainscot. Then that you can tile over. You may have used a product ( or one similar) called Denshield. This is a 1/2 special backer board you can use on floors and you work with it just like a sheet rock. because it was a light weight fiberglass impregnated gypsum board. Just like the 1/2 cement board you could use it on floors and wall where moisture is present and you installed it in a thinset bed of mortar prior to nailing it down. Sheet rock is a general term for dry wall, used for regular walls to be painted. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:I have a 15x15 tile that is on the floor in front of a gas fireplace (never been used) that has a hairline crack in it. The tile is one of 4 on the floor and matches 8 others that ring the face of the gas fireplace, the bathrooms and the kitchen. I cannot find the same tile to replace it. There is no elevation difference across the crack. Is there a method to fill the hairline crack so it doesn‘t stand out like a sore thumb?
Try adding some dye to grout to match the color. You will still know the crack is there but nobody else will! You can also use silicone but its harder to work with and doesnt last as long. You may want to experiment with the color by mixing a couple different colors to see which one is the best. Get the dye from a masonry or tile supply house. It is meant for grout. Have fun, Dan
Q:CAN I LAY TILE WITH NO GROUT LINES?
The other Steve is correct. Tile is designed specifically to be grouted, most importantly to keep dirt, etc. out of even the most minute space if you BUTT them together, beyond that aesthetics is another purpose. You can create a grout line as thin as 1/8 inch. The issue is in the bonding agents of the grout, and it's intended purpose. All that said however CAN is certainly something valid. Will it remain a valid/viable installation? Doubtful. Since you don't add detail about the WHY of your notion, it's difficult to assess the issue. It would seem as an assumption that you might be happier with a smooth, seamless surface, which you wouldn't get by butting tiles with no grout lines either. Steven Wolf Thousands of sq. ft. of tile
Q:i had a pipe leak into my bedroom and now everything is torn apart so i am remodeling my room and i cant decide between wood or tile flooring. my dad said wood because it looks good and because our living room and theater room is tile and if my bedroom is tile it wouldnt make any sense. my mom says i should get tile because if my grandma spills her drink or eat in my room it wont ruin the tile and its easy to clean up but if wood it could be ruined with scratch marks or circle stain on the wood from the cup or drink she spills. so now i dont know which one to choose. also i would like to paint my room blue and wonder if you guys have any suggestions on the shade colors of blue any website or image of the shade color would be nice if i could view them. thank you in advance!
Tile is very nice if you live in a warm climate like Florida. In cooler areas, it can sometimes feel cold in the wintertime. As to ease of cleaning, I find my tile floors are actually harder to keep up than the wood laminate because the grout gets dirty looking and is a lot of work to clean. I protect my wood laminate floors twice a year with a product made for the purpose and they are quite resistant to spills and scrapes. If you go for wood laminate, however, be aware that there is some cheap imported laminate on the market that will not stand up at all well. Buy at least 9 mm and preferably 12 mm laminate made in US, Canada or Europe. You'll find a rich wood tone in your bedroom gives you a warmer feeling in winter, yet feels comfortable in winter.
Q:we are planning on replacing our livingroom carpet, !/2 of it withceramic tile. Is there any do‘s and don‘ts to consider. Thanks.
With all due respect and not knowing at all your DESIGN, certainly I have suugestions. After installing thousands of sq. ft of tile, and various other flooring I ask that you e mail me. The tile installed may be at some similar level to the tile but needs transition molding, and again without knowing the design; is to to be a DECO thing or a simple carpet butted to tile as in half a space? The installation process isn't so difficult even for a DY, but there are things to consider, I offer all the help, through my experience, I can offer in emailing me... even if I'm not BEST. Q:I want to install hardwood in all my house, except bathrooms.I currently have ceramic tile flooring. I know removing it and installing solid hardwood will be expensive. Can I install floaring hardwood over the ceramic tile?? I went to Lowe‘s, and the flooring assistant recommended me to to that. With the correct underlayment should be not trouble at all.Have you install it that way?? WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE??
it will last about a 9 months and you will start to have problems. If this is your home remove the tile if you are renting float away. Problems you will see: floor warps, moisture underneath starts to turn the edges on the wood floor black, your floor will creak, bubbles in floor as well.
Q:Which tile is best Porcelain or ceramic for a concrete floor?
Well porcelain tile -is- ceramic tile. It's just a bit of a different mix and baked differently than the ceramic, so that the color goes through the entire tile and not just at the top. The porcelain is also a more durable tile, so if you plan on dropping heavy things on the floor down there, then that's the one for you. In a basement, both will be pretty cold underfoot too. Just check for moisture issues and that it's properly level first before doing anything, but either way you are good to go :)
Q:Is there a paint that can paint over bathroom tile?
I'm guessing that you're looking for total coverage and not just for a small decorative purpose. In that case, it's really all about the prep work you put into it. Wash the tiles down with a TSP mixture, to remove any oil residue off the tile and wash that off afterwards, making sure it's dry. Then apply a primer to the tiles. I've personally found the Glidden Gripper primer to work best at covering ceramic/porcelain. Give that about 24 hours to set once you apply it. You can then cover it with your choice of paint and sheen. I would highly recommend a glossy paint though so it stands up to water; a satin or semi-gloss will work best. Using a foam roller is also a good idea, as this will give it the smoothest finish possible. I would however only recommend this for -wall- applications. It's not meant to be done on the floor and in that case you are better off with a skim coat of concrete and starting with a different type of floor. Painting it won't hold up over time, unless it's an epoxy type paint, but those are more formulated for masonry. Hope this helps!~
Q:Have you used the marble tiles, the quality, the price?
In the choice of floor tiles, the focus should be considered such a few aspects: First, look at the brand. Only the well-known brands of floor tiles, the quality of its building materials to meet the national standards, the content of harmful substances in the safe range. Second, to see its anti-fouling ability, if the family are very busy, two or three days to clean a health, it would choose to better defrost capacity. Third, if the home has the elderly and children, then the purchase must be made about non-slip test.
Q:I have a small bathroom (toilet only) that has carpet that smells and I want to replace it with 12 X 12 inch tiles. Is there a type of tile that will make the installation simple (avoid grout) and is easy to cut and easy to installHigher quality but simple installation is desired.
HomeDepot or Lowes has a stick on tile that requires no grout. It has a peel off back that leaves an adhesive that will stick to the floor. Make sure the concrete or whatever is under the rug is clean and dry. The tile is thin so it can be cut with heavy duty scissors or utility knife.
