- Q: My 2002 E39 never burned any oil. All of a sudden it is starting to use 1 quart every 2 to 3 thousand miles. I dont see any drips so I am surmising it is burning it. A few days ago when I started the car a large cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust. I wiped the exhaust with my finger and it was oily. It only did this once but it seems coincidental. - no. those things make the oil flow down into the oil pan. you actually want oil to stick to the metal. it's better when you start the engine. If you want to get the best oil for your engine. Just do what I do and use full synthetic. just use the proper oil weight (usually 5W-XX) that they say to use in the owners manual. Syn doesn't break down at high temps and it lasts 5 times longer than the natural oil. Many people just change the oil filter and just add more syn oil. don't waste you're money on syn blend, either use the all natural oil or the all syn. If you use the blend then you still have oil that will break down just as fast as it would be if it was all natural oil. I own a toyota celica and I use syn and nothing else. tom
