Q: Last month, I covered my allotment with black plasting sheeting to suppress weeds, how long before weeds/grass is gead I can start digging?
Personally, I only use plastic to keep down weeds during the growing season and cut cross slits to plant through. Instead, I remove the top 2 to 3 inches of soil and discard them (well chopped) in the compost. Then I add soil amendments such as a cheap fertilizer called Milorganite, Bone meal, Sugar, Epsom salt and cream of tartar (a form of Potassium).
Q: Trying to make a solar cooker and I'm wondering if glass would work better than plastic sheets to keep the heat in. Well?
Yes A double pane glass could work even better, the gap insulates and helps retain heat. Note that double pane glass is sealed so you would have to work with the size you get. It also may have a coating inside that lets heat (infrared light) pass one way easier than the other. One way would keep heat inside in cold climates or reversed would help keep heat out in hot climates.
Q: Are plastic sheets resistant to deformation under load?
Yes, plastic sheets are generally resistant to deformation under load. This is because they possess properties such as high strength, rigidity, and durability, allowing them to maintain their shape and structural integrity even when subjected to heavy loads or pressure.
Q: I am looking for something very thin and lightweight, but rigid. Not plexiglass. A little texture would be ok. I plan to paint it. I've seen the material I want in the little sample sheets that you can get with countertops, or siding or something. It is very thin - less than 1/16. Anyone know where I can get that in sheet form? thanks!
I think what you are looking for is ABS sheet. It is paintable, rigid, not brittle, and is affordable. ABS sheet comes as standard with a hair-cell texture on one side and is smooth on the other. It comes in Black or White as standard (but shouldn't matter if you are going to paint it). ABS comes in sheets .040, .060 (which is 1/16) and thicker. ABS is the common name for Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. Another material that may work for you would be Rigid Vinyl (PVC) - it is smooth on both sides, but is still paintable. Hope this helps.
Q: Hi all,I would like to know how to calculate the maximum volume of a bag made from 1 folded plastic sheet of which the outer edges are welded together. Say the bag is 1 m x 2 m. If I inflate that bag, the volume will increase until it reaches a maximum. Does somebody know how to calculate the maximum volume? Thanks
I don't know, and this is an approximation. Suppose the center cross-section of the bag (1 meter from each end) inflates to where it is perfectly circular. The diameter of the circle will be (2 m)/pi = 0.6366 m. Near the ends of the bag, the cross-sections parallel to this center cross-section might be very narrow ellipses; and exactly at the ends of the bag, the X-section is 0. Let's suppose the semi-minor axis of each ellipse decreases linearly from 0.3183 m to 0 unifomly as you move along the long axis of the bag. Note that you will not get 1 full meter away from the central X-section, because the section looking sideways at the 2-m seam is a rhombus of perimeter 4m, and its minor diagonal is 0.6366 m. Then the full length of the inflated bag would be 2 sqrt(1^2-0.3183^2) = 1.896 m. So I'm going to assume every cross-section parallel to the circular cross-section is an ellipse, whose semi-minor axis varies linearly from 0.3183m down to zero, and whose semi-major axis varies linearly from 0.3183m up to 0.5m. In particular, taking x=0 to be the coordinate of the circular X-section, I have b = 0.3183 - (0.3183/0.948) x, and a = 0.3183 + (0.1817/0.948) x. The area of each ellipse is pi*a*b, and the volume of the bag is 2 times the integral from x=0 to x=0.948 of pi ab dx = 2*int from x=0 to x=0.948 of pi [0.3183 - (0.3183/0.948)x] [0.3183 + (0.1817/0.948)x ] dx = 2 * int from x=0 to x=0.948 of pi [0.1013 - (0.3183/0.948)(0.1366 x) - 0.06435x^2 ] dx = 2 * int x=0 to x=0.948 of pi [0.1013 - 0.04586 x - 0.06435 x^2] dx After integration you have 2*pi [0.1013x - 0.02293 x^2 - 0.02145 x^3] to be evaluated at x=0 and x=0.948 meters = 2 pi [0.096 - 0.0206 - 0.0183] cubic meters = (6.28)(0.057) = 0.36 cubic meters Another figure for comparison is a prolate ellipsoid whose minor semi-axes are both 0.3183 and whose major semi-axis is something like 0.9; its volume would be pi*a*b*c = 0.29 m^3. So, my first answer probably isn't completely crazy...
Q: I was shopping around online and found this product that they call a dust jacket protector. But I was wondering what store like Wal-Mart or Target could I buy something similar to the dust jacket protector AND what would that be called?
It is called a drop cloth. They come in different weights of plastic. For a dust jacket you would want a fairly heavy (thick) one. Wal-mart has some as do MOST paint stores.
Q: Where to buy flexible sheets of plastic for us as a leaf bag liner 5' x 4'?
Lowes and Home Depot carry plexi glass that is some what flexible and comes in 4x8 sheets.
Q: Are plastic sheets flammable?
Yes, plastic sheets can be flammable. The flammability of plastic sheets depends on the type of plastic used and its composition. Some plastics are more flammable than others, and if exposed to high heat or an open flame, they can ignite and burn.
Q: Can plants grow well under 4 millimeter plastic sheeting.?
Yes but if you haven't bought it yet make sure you get something that is resistant to UV rays, it will last longer.
Q: I can't think of the name of this material at the moment and have searched the net to no avail so far. They are made to look like tiles/slates but come in sheets measuring about 8x4 ft. They are light by comparison with the real thing and would suit the roof I need to cover. Can anyone refer me to a website dealing with them or give me any details as to how they are installed? Thanks for the info!!!
There are many kinds of polycarbonate and steel corrugated roof panels on the market, and where I live they don't meet the building codes. They are fine for an outbuilding, porch, greenhouse, or polebarn, but not for use on a habitated structure. Make a call to the local building inspector and ask him, also ask him if they are acceptable for your intended use.
