Q: Hi, I recently replaced a washer on my hot water faucet and now when running the hot and cold water to shower etc. both run for a bit of time and then I hear a thunk noise (loud enough to hear above the noise of water running) and the hot water will drop off as if it is turned off. I then turn on more and the water runs with no problem. This is constant every time I use it. Any ideas. I believe my cold water slows down also but cannot be sure. I have two handle faucet with a pull up button (for shower) on spout. Sometimes the water after turning it up will come out of the faucet head alittle as if the water is pushing out where ever it can. Generally you need to replace the entire tub/shower valve, but some manufactures design theirs with a replaceble anti-scald unit.

Q: These appear to be made such that one could turn it by hand. Unfortunately these are so tight I can't budge them. If not, what tool does one use for this?: I replace a lot of faucets in my handiman business and after fighting these things day in and day out I finally designed a tool that I made in my shop at home that works like a charm. It's a piece of 1" x 12" galvanized steel pipe. On one end I cut 2 sets of notches in the sides directly across from one another with a hacksaw, then knocked the small pieces out, leaving what looks like the top of a chess rook. The 1" pipe opening is big enough to slide over the brass threaded shank that the nut screws onto and the four teeth grab the four tabs on the nylon nut. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the opposite end, through both sides for the shank of a screwdriver. Works like a charm and saves the knuckles and a lot of cuss words.

Thanks.: It would actually be helpful for you to go to a home improvement store and ask the people in plumbing. They can then show you what you're going to be up against, and how the various faucet models are fastened into the sink. Usually, for the type of faucet with two handles on either side of the spigot, there is a threaded water pipe coming down from the bottom of each valve. These then fit through the holes on the edge of the sink and you slip what's called a spanner nut onto these pipes, and tighten them up to fasten the faucet to the sink. You then attach the water supply lines to these pipes. For the types of faucet with the single handle in the middle, you may only have one threaded pipe with the water supply lines running up through it. One issue you may have in accessing the spanner nuts is that there's not enough room between the sink and back wall to access the nuts. In this case, you'll need a tool called a spanner wrench, which is basically a crescent-shaped metal clamp on the end of a metal handle that clamps down onto the nut when you turn it (ask the sales person in plumbing to show you one). Removing the old faucet can be the hardest part, especially if the old parts are rusted or corroded in place.
