- Hello, It would be smarter if you didn't use that kind of cage. The plastic tubes fall apart and it's not very safe or secure for the hamster. A Syrian hamster Shouldn't get stuck, but you never know. I perfer to use aquariums with wire lids. They work amazing. Or else get a plastic storage container (square bucket thing) and drill holes into the sides and roof. (don't put the holes to big or close together; cage may crack or hamster may get out). - That's the old ABS plastic. It's not used much anymore because of problems with building codes. It's no more toxic than PVC. until a house fire starts it to burn. Stay away from old joints with cement, sterilize as you would with any other ornament and you'll be fine. You can also still buy it new.

- You might try using plastic tubing and plugging the ends. Glass tubing is another way to go, more durable but also more expensive more work. Glass tubing can be cut to length then closed off on one end by heating in a flame until it pulls together. Large drinking straws could work as well, you could seal the bottoms with an iron by placing the straw between aluminum foil sheets.
