- Q: i have to do a science fair project and thought it would be cool to make a solar powered vw bus. i have 2 6volt solar panels to power a dc motor that works off of 9v 2v or 8v. i also bought a 2nd motor because the first wasnt workin for us. this one is a 3v motor. ive had them in the sun but they wont work. please help, thanks
- You didn't say how much power your panels can produce, or how much power (current x volts) the motors require. The panels must meet or exceed what the motor requires. You might need to get a very small motor and a little gearbox out of some other motorized toy, or at least a small pinion gear for the motor and a larger ring gear that can be attached to an axle (similar to how RC cars accomplish their drive train). A worm gear drive set might be even better if the motor / solar panel combination isn't very powerful - it'll go slowly, but some movement is better than no movement. If you put the panels in series, a 2 V motor should be the best match (again, only if its power requirements are small enough). If you want to try running the 3 volt motor off the panels, you might try paralleling them (make sure you get the polarity right or they'll try to kill each other) - you'll still be mis-matched, but if the motor requires less power than the 9/2/8 volt motor(s), it might work. If you have or can acquire a multi-meter, you'll be able to measure the voltages and currents and that will not only help you see what's going on, but adding some details might help others help you get this working.

- Q: i don't know very much about it, but can you somehow take off the little solar panels off of the outdoor light things and make it so you can hook an outlet up to it and plug in to it like a phone charger for electricity.
- Little solar panels on lights are very low power. The battery in one such may be 0.5 Amp-hours and .2 V ; it may be different but it should be marked on the panel/battery/manual. An outlet in your house is designed to run on 20 V (typically in N. Am.) and they run on alternating current (AC) whereas the panel generates direct current (DC). (If you don't know the difference, do not worry to much but just understand that they are not directly compatible.) You therefore need an inverter to change DC to AC (and lose some although inverters are now very efficient). But the amount of power generated by those panels is still very small. That is why solar lights are low power (just a few watts in most cases). To make things even more irritating, phone chargers do not work off 20 V AC as you are charging the battery and need a low voltage DC -- which is what the solar panel is giving you. It is almost certain that the voltage from the panel will be less than the voltage required for the phone. The charger is mostly cable but there is a black box incorporated and it should say what the voltage and current output are (the input will be 20V). So you should be able to overcome this not by hooking up the panel to a 20V outlet and then plugging the charger in but by hooking up the panel to the phone directly if you can get enough voltage out of the solar panel (or hook up several) and if you fashion a connection device. They already make them -- solar battery chargers and I am sure you can enter that into a search engine and find loads. Typically the panel alone is much more than a solar light -- which shows the relative power requirements.

- Q: Photo-Voltaic solar panels are very expensive. Most of a home's energy needs are for heating water, heating and air-conditioning. All of these can be met with thermal solar collectors which are much less expensive. The thermal solar panels would heat water stored in a hot water tank which then can be used as hot water, to heat the home, or as the heat source to a Lithium Bromide Absorption chiller to air-condition a home. With the base line needs met without expensive panels and without inefficient energy conversions, only a small Photo-Voltaic array would be needed for the remaining power needs and since those needs are variable, there would still be power to sell to the grid.
- you completely nailed it!! speaking about large buildings, it would benefit one to do a little more research. my company just installed a 640 collecter system on a million sq foot building. it consists of a absorption chiller (which uses no coolant, just water a silica gel beds, runs of the power of its controller, thats it) 27,000 gallon tank. chiller feeds 2 rotation units and 2 large office spaces for heat and cool. payback expected at less than 5 years. we will expand this system another 200 collectors. residential installs, if tax credits used, achieve 5-7 year payback pending domestic hot water only or dhw and space heating. thermal collectors actually produce more energy than pv panels do, therefore more bang for your buck, also as i hope you all know, pv has around 25% eff, thermal has 95%. also to say the tech part is gone, we use flowmeters that calculate carbon offsets, energy saved, money saved etc...all located in a wireless monitor for the consumer to enjoy.

- We are having solar panels installed this Friday. Call a company called Solar City. You can work it through them 3 different ways, you can buy them out right and reap 00% savings, or lease them (like we are) and sign a contract. You won't pay a dime to lease them but your savings won't be as much. The plus side is, you don't have the huge expense either and they are responsible for the maintenance. Lastly, you can lease as the latter option, and purchase during any point of the lease at a pro-rata cost. You can also chose to buy the panels cheaply when your lease is up, but they may be very outdated by then. We have found Solar City top notch, highly trained, extremely polite and considerate. We found them set up at Home Depot. It took from about last January, I think it was, until this Friday, for installation, and then it will be about another 6 weeks until the service is actually turned on. - it depends on your solar panel, but you can sure supply most if all of your electronics and electric stuff in your house on a sunny day. If you want to know exactly how much power it supplies and how much $$ you can save you simply have to calculate how much power your home consumes per day/month. I know of people totally reliable on solar power for their home and I too will put solar panels on my home one day.
