Q:I adopted two new gerbils yesterday, and they are pretty well adapted so far. They live in an aquarium with a connected bin which is much larger and hold many things to chew on tons of bedding to dig in. These are two of the things they like best. Unfortunately, despite having tons of things to chew on including paper towels, wood blocks (which they don't find the least bit interesting), and cardboard (which is their favorite thing to chew on), one of my gerbils still resorts to chewing on the inside of the plastic tubes connecting the bin to the aquarium. Any ideas on how to stop it? I can't connect them any other way, and the only way they would get to the bin other than the tubes, would be for me to manually place them there (they don't trust me completely yet, but they are curious and have come up and sniffed, walked on my hand). Trying to catch them makes feel like a I'm stressing them out, and making them scared of me. What should I do?
First of all, aspen isn't good for rodent. Try using Carefresh or atleast pine. U probably think they're eating it but they aren't. They';re probably just putting it inside in their pouch to bring it to their nest or something. My gerbil does that too. So don't worry about it. Maybe you can put more bedding inside thegerbil's nest to save up some work for the gerbil. =)
Q:I use a length of plastic tubing and after using it for a while (few months) it changed from clear to opaque. It had been exposed to heat, alcohol and water, nothing else. If you know why it changed colors please fill me in. Also, I would like to know if it is changed chemically that might effect things traveling through it or if it is merely a cosmetic change and I can ignore it for the most part.
If the plastic tubing was exposed to heat, then the resultant color change was most like due to a disruption in the chemical lattice of the plastic. A plastic is basically a polymer or group of polymers (polymer=same chemical compound repeated over and over again). When heat or another energy source is apllied, it has the ability to alter the polymer structure. Think of a polymer in similar terms as a crystal; all of the compounds in the plastic will align themselves in a similar way as the previous compound. When you do this with minerals, you end up with a clear or partially clear crystal. The same basic principal applies to polymers (plastics). Hope this helps!! P.S. some chemicals have the same ability to alter the plastic, same as an enrgy source..
Q:I have a long flexible 1 plastic tube that is attached to itself forming a closed circuit and I'd like to add an electric blower to it to flow air continuously that will make a small ball go around continuously. I'd like to splice the blower into the 1 plastic tube but need to know where or how to exhaust the air to keep the air circuit moving continuously in one direction.
there may be an easier way... use a y connection to join the tube.. the blower is one part of the y it forces the air into the tube at an angle.. the ball will then move past the spot where the pump is blowing pump y .................y ......................y h h h y.....y........y.h.h.h.h the h's are then connected end to end and the ball willl move clockwise .. remember that you are forcing air into a closed system so you will have to put some vent holes in the hose to allow some air to escape or put a pressure release valve to let the pressure drop when its too high..
Q:This is for silver eagles, silver maple leafs, and silver rounds that i have stored in plastic coins tubes. I have been using cotton balls stuffed into the top to take up air space and prevent sliding around; but will this damage the silver?
Cotton balls work fine, and won't damage the silver IF they are clean and you don't shake the tubes a lot. (Coin companies use cotton balls when shipping coins in tubes if needed.)
