- OK, first, what kind of crane? there are many different kinds that do many different things. From loading containers at the seaport to high rise buildings. One does not just go into cranes. The more experienced ones, started out as oilers or greasers. Some started out as signal persons. They learned by watching and listening. In the following states you must hold National certification: CA, HA,MT,OR,WA,MN,WV,NM,RI,NJ,NV,NY UT. PA and SC have restrictions now but will be added sometime soon. You can attend a crane school that prepares you for the national certification, but it expensive and not easy for someone without a background working around cranes. There is a lot of terminology and mathematics involved. Not to mention the Federal, state, local and OSHA rules you must practice. Go to your state employment office. They have all the information you need. get to know one of the counselors and pursue your dream. It is not as easy as it seems. But is it a well paying career. Good luck Bill

- the capacity of a travelling crane relates to its resistance to tipping, and is dependent upon wheelbase, which can be extended by use of the outriggers, and counterweight (the big boxy thing at the back of the crane). Every lift requires a firm and stable platform which is what the outriggers provide. For every lift (weight) and reach (how far from the slew point), there is a limiting capacity factor. This is required to be posted within the operator's cab. The actual load lifted may be monitored by a load cell on a running rope (or other location), and through a computer control, limit the actual capacity of the crane.
- Q: I have seen a crane sitting in a tree watching over the pond in my front yard. I have never seen any fish in the pond and so i am curious as to why the crane is there. I thought cranes only hangout by ponds if there are fish. Does anyone have an research hypotheses to why the crane is there?thanks in advance

- Very large capacity crane vessels have propulsion machinery for manoeuvring when on station. The most modern designs of semi-submersible vessel use them to achieve 'dynamic positioning'. Older designs used the propulsion systems to assist when deploying the anchors in the correct pattern. The vessels are towed by tugs when making deep sea passages. First generation crane vessels had much smaller lifting capacities and were either constructed on conventional hulls or were converted from existing ships. These types were capable of making ocean passages using their own propelling machinery.

- You could but it's a waste of time and it isn't really keepable.. No offence intended but it'll just be an extra mess. Give him something he can keep and plus you'll waste your time if you guys ever break up. However, it can also be a good luck for him and it's a good gift considering you put so much effort in it

- Sure. Let's say that a crane needs to hoist a load of 10 tons, and that because it needs to reach over some obstacles, needs to lift at a horizontal distance of 50 feet away. That creates a torque about the base of the crane of 500 ton·ft. By positioning a counterweight on the opposite side of the tower, the magnitude of the moment can be mitigated. For instance, let's say a counterweight of 10 tons is positioned at 25 ft on the other side of the tower. The moment produced by the counterweight is 250 ton·ft, so the net moment at the base is 250 ton·ft. Furthermore, when the 10 ton load is positioned and release, there is still a 250 ton·ft moment at the base of the tower; it has simply switched direction (say from rotating the crane to the right, to rotating it to the left).
