Q: A lot of 'nu-metal' bands are considered alternative metal bands. Are the two genres different? I believe there is a slight difference. So the main question is... are they the same? Q: Science Class assignment due tomorrow...11/20/06: The term nu-metal was, as someone else mentioned, a term conjured up by the media in order to help popularize the sales of metal albums. In reality, nu-metal is (or rather, was) properly known as aggro rock. It does have elements of metal, but that's mixed in with countless other influences, which can include genres like grunge, alternative, hip-hop, punk/hardcore, post-punk/post-hardcore, etc. It's pretty much a cesspool of genres, and metal only makes up a small portion of it. So yes, metal influences do exist within the genre; they are just not dominant.

Q: I hate to be too much of a genre know it all, but this has been bugging me for a long time. I love all sorts of progressive metal bands, but I don't know what differentiates them from the other genres of metal. Bands like Symphony X, Suspyre, and Pathosray are examples of progressive metal bands that I like.: As non-metals and metal come in many varieties with different properties, and those properties may be advantageous or disadvantageous depending on what you want to do with the material, there is no simple answer. If you want electrical insulation, most non-metals have the advantage of not conducting electricity. If you want a window, some non-metals are transparent, whereas no metal is. If you want jewelry, plastic is a lot cheaper than gold. etc.
