- That would depend on the variables. There are times when machinery would not be optimal due to the delicate nature of the crop. There are also times when machinery is absolutely necessary for the exact same reason and also where time is a factor. I would encourage the most expedient for whatever the job may be at the time. I have a brother that I am currently encouraging to go to western union for a gift I've sent to him on 2/07. That will require an expedient manual act on his part. He lives in India.

- Q1 === If you double the frequency, this means that you are doubling the number of times that the cylinder goes up, hits it's highest point, turns around and comes back down again in a second. You must be doubling the distance the piston travels. The time is one second, so effectively you are doubling the speed. Q2 === Jerk in this sense is one of those wonderful descriptive words that works in the real world, but is hard to put into a formula. I wonder if you have to do that. Certainly the force increases because the turn around time is much smaller when the frequency is doubled. That means time in this formula F = m*(vf - vi)/t is much smaller and that makes the force larger. Q3 == So machinery must break down because the force on moving the piston up and down has become much larger.

I also know that some plants produce a lot of tomatoes all at once(determinate) and that some grow a long time and produce fruit for months(indeterminate). But I do not know why everybody would not just grow a determinate species and use a harvester.
- The other posters gave you good answers. The other point I would raise is that harvesting machinery is very expensive and only the largest farms can afford them. For most vegetable growers, especially if they are growing a variety of vegetable crops, they don't have the economy of scale to justify the investment.
