- Petroleum engineers do not have any thing to do with the design of machinery. Their primary interest is the underground reservoirs that contain oil and gas. They can spend some time around a drilling rig but they do most of their work in an office. Having hearing aids should not be a problem in terms of employment. You need to realize that picking discipline for salary is the wrong thing to do for two reasons. One you should always work at something you enjoy and are good at. Two, just because a given discipline has a higher average salary doesn't mean you will be one of the engineers that earns that higher salary.

- I have served with each of these. Shore duty tends to be in factories alongside a pier. They are called: Intermediate Maintenance and Repair Facilities. Basically machine shops that rebuild valves. However I know one guy that was on a boat with me who got orders to NAS Fallon Nevada to be in charge of their go-cart course. They needed a EN to keep the go-carts running. The needs of the Navy change every month. To say which rate with advance the fastest is a guess. It changes all the time. If you stay out of trouble, you can serve for 20 years and get a pension. Anyone who guarantees you that by doing 'X' will make you a chief, is lying. They all work hard. And they are each highly valued jobs, with good job prospects when you get out. I would recommend that you consider subs too. The extra pay does not hurt.

- W/O a doubt, the problem is that they themselves dont see it, they feel the currnent situation is all Bush's fault. Where would we be now without him in office? In Iran they are counting on the demorcratic leader ship to withdraw and not confront Iran on their ambitions to dominate with terror the region. We will rue the day we turned soft on this issue, we will then see the similarities between now and 1933. But it will be too late. Then you had moths to gear up for war, now with technology it is a different story.

- Like from scratch? All of the parts? I would start with a factory which can build chips. You will need to produce all the chips in your computer; CPU, RAM, and a bunch of other chips for I/O access etc. Then you will need to produce the motherboard PCB. Then another factory to build hard drives and optical drives. Then another factory to build the case. Oh, yes, another one to build power supplies. But nobody builds computers like this. A manufacturer will make some parts but buy the rest from suppliers.
