- Q: My husband ( yes...the one with the dents in his head from the cooker hood ) is fixing rustic tiles in my kitchen. He has done loads of tiling with plain tiles ( i.e straight edges!!) but we're wondering about spacing these with irregular edges. Very little advice on the web apart from to space them more widely which doesn't really help! Anyone done this and pleased with the result?
- Boy Boy and Julie are right about these types of tile.. One thing they didn t hit on is the type of tile can make a difference on the spacing. The body type and the thickness will effect the type of grout you use and thus the spacing also..From experiance ( 20 years) I m guessing you ll need a sanded grout and a minimum of 1/8 inch spacing from the way you discribe the tile..If they have a rounded type edge keep the space to and 1/8 th inch since when you grout it flush that round edge will cause the grout joint to widen and look like 1/4 inch space..If there a square edge then you cal go to maybe 3/8 or 1/4 inch depending on the look you like and just how much outta size they are..GL any ?? e mail me
- Q: I have a bathtub that the bottom row of tiles are getting loose on the top portion. A few have come out.The row above seems ok.Can the bottom row be resealed or replaced without interfering with the upper tiles? If so how?
- Yes. I just did that very job recently. Use a masonry chisel and a rubber mallet to breakaway the remaining tiles along the bottom row by tapping the chisel lightly across the top and sides of the tiles. Be sure to hold the tiles directly connected to the one you are removing firmly against the wall as you gently pry the tile loose. If you pull any tiles away from wall they will also need to be removed and replaced as well. Carefully knock off all of the old grout and the old adhesive left on the wall. Clean and dry wall apply replacement tiles with tile adhesive/grout mix. use rubber tile spacers to keep the new tiles aligned while they set up. Remove spacers after 30 minutes and lightly rub off the excess grout with a tile float and damp sponge. Let dry overnight and buff with a clean towel. apply grout sealer and caulk along edge of tub and corners to insure a good waterproof seal. Good luck.
- Q: I had a person re-grout the 4 tiles years ago. That person was a dufus and left some grout on the tiles instead of just in the grooves.. It is still there! How could I remove the small patches of grout from the front of the white tiles? As a point of information, the repair guy messed up by grouting ALL of the tiles when he first started. The grout drys so fast that it set up hard before it could be struck and finished and the excess washed off. The tile setter guy is supposed to do just a very few tiles at a time.
- Hopefully, all of your tiles have grout AND sealer. You can try plain ol' scrapping it off, but be careful not to scratch the tiles. Try using white vinegar to soften the grout, but be sure not to get any on the grout that you want to save. Use a small sponge, or even Q-tips. You may have to let it soak a few minutes. Also, try using a plastic scraper instead of a metal one, like a pan scraper. If you have any spare tiles, practice scraping to see if you're scratching the tile.
- Q: How to choose the difference between tile types
- 4, tiles In fact, the tiles are all tiles, the surface is smooth but does not require polishing, so there is no problem of polished porosity. Tile is a reinforced polished tiles, which are made of high temperature firing. Texture is harder and more abrasive than polished tiles. There is no doubt that its price is also higher. 5, mosaic Mosaic is a special way of forming a brick, which is usually composed of ten pieces of small pieces of brick to form a relatively large brick. It is small and exquisite, colorful is widely used in indoor small area, wall and outdoor large and small wall and the ground. Mosaic is divided into ceramic mosaic, marble mosaic, glass mosaic these three types.
- Q: i;m going to install a medallion and i need to cut circle on four tiles. is there anything else besides a hand grinder that will do the job, ( cheap) i don‘t want to spend 300$$ just to cut 4 tiles to make a circle for the medallion to fit. thanks
- Maybe take them back to where you bought they along with the medallion and see if they will do them for you. NOt an easy job!
- Q: standard shiny, white 4x4 tiles. I want to redo the bathroom stalls, but heard from some people that it could take forever, and that i might end up messing up the the drywall? to me it sounds simple... just get a spatula or something of the sort and scrape off the tiles... is that how it goes or is it more difficult than that? has anyone out there done this? what tools would i need? what type of tile cutter do you suggest? i‘d like to replace the tiles with something bigger... maybe 10x10 tiles?
- Being that your house is pretty new most likely the tiles are on drywall and set using latex glue. However if they were set using thinset cement on drywall it will be a little harder or if the builder used the older method and set the tiles in cement on wire mesh, then it's a beast and everything must come down. Using a stiff putty knife start at the top and tap the putty knife behind the tiles and gently pry away from the wall. You will have some damage to the drywall, apply drywall compound, let dry sand down and paint with primer. NOTE: Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves, broken tile is very sharp. Also protect your tub by installing a piece of plywood on top of it to prevent falling tiles from damaging it. It's also not a bad ideal to just tear out the drywall and tile and install new backer board. Maybe a little more work money but In the long run it will make for a much better job. If you are going to use that large of tile you really should tear it out and use the cement backer board and thinset as your glue as these tiles are heavy. Rent a wet saw to cut the tiles.
- Q: You are tiling a room with 1 foot squares tiles. The room is 11 feet 8 in wide and 15 ft 8 in long. How many whole tiles will you need? How many tiles will need to be cut? Each box of tiles covers 10 square feet. How many boxes of tiles will you need?
- I believe the answer for the first question is 192. You are ASSUMING that you need not to count the cut ones. The first part of the problem saids You are tiling a room therefore you need to supply with whole tiles, a store will not sell cut and you cannot cut what you have not purchased. For any engineer, architect, builder the order of process is total needed, and then how many need to be cut and then you place your order so you need to know the number of packages. If answered your way that is when you see people going back to the store to buy more because they did not think orderly.
- Q: I‘m on a tight budget but some people say tile is better I dont know which is best and will last longer and easy to maintain Any ideas what to do?
- tile is more expensive in the long run. Each tile doesn't cost that much but you have to install subflooring for ceramic tile. The total floor to bear the weight has to be at least 1 inch thick. Lino is warmer and easy to maintain. Myself I would tile if I had the money but would settle for a nice lino that looked like tile if cost was a factor as you stated.
- Q: why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
- You should use special green board for the shower. It is water resistant not water proof. This gives the best base for the tiles. You should leave the adhesive set up totally before grouting because the gases that are in the glue need a place to go. This includes thin set mortar because of the water vapor it out gases. Good luck
- Q: It is necessary to start the decoration of the house. The The How does the bedroom match? How does the living room match? How does the bathroom match? How does the kitchen match? I would like to bedroom with the floor, the rest with tiles; please heroes to help me with the next color
- Disadvantages Exposure - 5 defects in the floor: the impact of weather and humidity; need regular maintenance; easy to deformation after flooding Alice; formaldehyde release; life is relatively short. Wood flooring is indeed a beautiful natural, comfortable foot feeling, good insulation properties, good things often need to pay more labor, easy to deformation of wood flooring, how much will have formaldehyde emissions, health hazards. Not easy to care, but also often wax to do maintenance.
