It looks as though the tile has never been sealed before so I‘m not sure if this is the cause. I have read online about efflorescence. Could this be that? - You will need 1062 3inch tiles or 65 12 inch tiles to do the surround. Thats not taking into account the the border tiles that are uselly curved so that they meld with the sheet rock that the cement board on top of. Nor the 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch that the grout will take up between the tiles.
- Q: My kitchen has a white ceramic tile floor. It never looks clean, every speck of dirt shows. Because we live in a slab home, the tiles are glued right to the concrete. I hate to think how much work it would be to remove them. I could tile over - but it would make the kitchen floor higher than the surrounding rooms. Is there any suitable product for changing the color of the tile in such a high traffic area?
- There is no GOOD way to do this. And you are right in that tiling over tile is a bad idea. You could go over it with a product like DuraCeramic, which would only raise the floor level up a small amount, but be aware that anything you put over that surface will likely make the existing surface unusable forevermore and you might regret it someday. The real solution would be to demo the existing tile and install new tile.

- I will go with Rob on this one. Yes, it's possible using epoxy-based adhesives. However, unless you have a lot of experience doing this, it won't look right, especially if you are doing walls and have exposed edges. How are you planning on finishing the edges? Have you accounted for the decreased room dimensions? There are way too many variables. Rip it out and start over. There is a good chance that you may have to go down to stud as drywall tends to pretty much get trashed when you take tile off of it. When I remodel a bath and am re-laying all the tile, I ALWAYS take it to stud and start over. It saves time in the long run and in my business, time is money.
- Q: We recently renovated and trying to save money, we did the tile ourselves after some research. We used thinset, then backerboard, screwed the backer-board down (extra screws in high traffic areas) then thinsetted the tiles down according to instructions using a 1 inch trowel and grouted. Most of the rooms are fine (for now) but here‘s the problem:Through the main pathway, we started hearing what sounded like a sandy noise. Not good as the thinset is sandy. Today, I‘ve noticed that the grout along a few of the tiles is beginning to crack meaning the tiles must be flexing. The tiles are discontinued, have brand new cabinets on top of them and won‘t be easy to take out and replace.What should I do? Would putting large rugs over it help, with the intention of cushioning the footsteps?
- A couple possibilities, the use of such a large trowel wasn t needed. The thin set may not have been set up before foot traffic was on it,and the bond was broken, leading to loose tiles and thus grout cracking. The thinset may have been to thick or thin leading to not bonding or poor bonding. The grout may have been to watery and thus weak from to much water or to much water was used in washing the tile when grouting. What are you wanting to do? Repair the tiles?Regrout? To find out if the tiles are loose, get down and rap your knuckles on the tile with the cracked grout and then off to the side in a less used area. If the tiles you suspect are loose, there will be a hollow sound especially along the edge of the tile.It should sound firm on the other area. You don t need a handy man for this. - Im sorry Ever Wolf, i'm sure you're a good contractor, but you're no tile installer. Non-sanded grout is for grout joints 1/8 or smaller. sanded grout is for grout joints 1/8 or larger. The sand is for stability in larger grout joints. NEVER use sanded grout in anything smaller than 1/8 When installing marble tile, it is customary to butt the tiles against each other with no grout joint at all. The edges of the tiles are machined with a micro-bevel so there will be a slight groove between them that are to be filled with an unsanded grout. Use latex fortefied WHITE thinset mortar. Marble can be a bit translucent and the darker grey thinset can show through. There is alot more to consider such as what to do with the edges, but that is too involved to try to explain here. good luck with your project!

- You really shouldn't walk on it until you install the grout and it is dry. You will have to walk on it a little while you are grouting it but wait until it's dry to have regular traffic on the tile. Usually it's good the next day after grouting. Note: Check the tiles after you motor them down for a hollow sound when tapped on. If you have any tiles that sound hollow remove them and then reinstall them because they will crack if you don't
