- Q: I have really old honeycomb tile in my bathroom and it would be extremely difficult to remove it. The surface is pretty flat .Would ceramic tile work best , or something like self stick vinyl tiles?
- for the wall you could--if the existing tile surface is sound and free of cracks and mold. wash it very thoroughly first with TSP. if its the floor your talking about, i definitely wouldnt go over old tile--it should come out before the new goes on. ive seen too many times where a new tile floor begins to crack because it has an un-level substrate.
- Q: I have gauges and scraps on my ceramic tile, i want to fix and even out the existing tile, then glaze it?
- If these tiles are already installed I think you are out of luck for any long term fix. Ceramic tile glaze is fired onto the tiles in a kiln at very high heat. The firing makes the glaze and tile bond in a way that fillers, puttys, or paint cannot achieve. If your tile is that worn, it is possible that you have the wrong grade of tile for the situation where it is being worn so much. You may have earned yourself a new tile shower, floor, countertop, whatever....
- Q: if there are 24 square tiles in a box and there are enough to cover 3 square feet, how big are the tiles?
- 24 tiles/3 sq ft =8 tiles per square foot. Since 8 is not a square, there is no solution, or the tiles cannot be square.
- Q: 2nd bathroom, rarely used. Not sure if I want to spend the time to remove the tile (200 sq ft) or just put a think underlayment over it and then laminate.Anything that I should be concerned with doing it this way?
- You don t say if its vinyl tile or ceramic tile. Vinyl tile the floor change is minimal and no problem. Doing it over a ceramic tile you may have a transition concern at the doorway. Other than raising the floor height, which I assume you realize, there is no concerns as long as the flooring down now is flat, solid and level, it ll be fine. - Q: Hello. To clean a fridge water was poured on the lower section . The water spilled out onto the floor where white tiles are. I left for a minute and came back and saw that the white tiles had grey blotches or spots. What happened, and how can I cure this?
- Tile won t stain under normal circumstances so I suspect the glaze is a bit worn off rt in front of the fridge.. That can be a wet spot that will dry eventually or stain the tile body in which you have no choice but to r and r the tile(s).. GL
- Q: i will be laying tiles o my bathroom floor and i am wondering if HomeDepot or Lowes do the tile cutting. i dont want to purchase the wet saw. i will need to cut tiles for corners and things like that. Thanks.
- Yeah, some of them do. Just go back to the tile section and ask. I know my local Lowe's does. They charge per tile I think. I personally recommend renting a wetsaw or buying a cheap wetsaw. You can buy one for about $50-75 if you buy a cheap one. The reason why I say that is because trying to get the cuts right when you are running back and forth isn't the easiest to do, especially if you have a lot of tiles to cut. There were many times when I did tiling in my kitchen that I needed to adjust how I cut the piece. For the cheap ones, I'd recommend buying a cheap large Rubbermaid container that isn't real tall to set the wetsaw in. It makes cleaning up a lot easier. If you have only a very few tiles to cut, then it might be better to have Lowe's or Home Depot cut them. The manual tile cutters work ok as long as you don't have to work on small tiles or very thick tiles. For my kitchen I had small thick tiles, so using a manual tile cutter didn't make sense. Manual tile cutters don't really cut the tile. They score the tile then break it. That's why thick small tiles work poorly on them. Manual tile cutters tend to work better for large or thin tiles like floor tiles or bathroom wall tiles like porcelain tiles. If the floor tiles are large floor tiles the manual tile cutter/breaker would be your best/cheapest option.
- Q: This is a new house and they put 16 inch tiles in the bathrooms, which I don't care for. The floors are fine as far as leveling goes, but I would like to put 12 inch tiles directly over the 16 inch ones. Would there be any problems?
- Tiles over tile is not a good idea. Just because the floor is level it isn't perfectly level. If the bottom of a tile is not perfectly level, you walking on it will eventually crack it. So the answer is no.
- Q: I have ceramic tile in my bathroom and I don‘t like it. It‘s extra slippery and very cold in the winter. Yes I do use a rug but the parts that are exposed are cold. I want to put those peel-n-stick tiles on top of them, but what do I have to do to prepare the floor if it‘s even possible to do this? Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!
- Peel and stick tiles are a bad idea even on the best sub floor. Putting them directly over ceramic is just begging for trouble. You will either have to put a levelling compound over the tile first or tear out the tile. I would strongly advise you tear out the tile if you really want a vinyl floor. You will be taking away some of the value of your house by taking out ceramic and installing vinyl. If you really want vinyl use sheet vinyl, the self stick tiles always unstick and the seams get lots of dirt stuck in them. If you have access to the floor under the tile you can always install in floor heating. It will feel real nice when you get out of the shower and it adds value to your house.
- Q: I have several boxes of wall tile and I would like to use some on a floor. Is this okay? What is the difference?
- No because when wall tile gets wet it gets very slipery. You would be creating an ice scating rink.
- Q: My husband and I put ceramic tile floors in our kitchen, dining room, office, and laundry. We cannot seem to get them clean. I use to scrub them with a brush and bleach but can‘t with a small child and being pregnant. We have tried swiffers (wet jet and sweepers) a mop and bucket, a steam mop, nothing seems to get them very clean, just pushes the dirt around. I need something that will get them sparkling and be easy to do while pregnant, please help.
- Nothing should stick to a glazed tile surface that fast and hard.. In my mind I have to ask you what else in the past have you ve been using on the floor and what kind of sealer did you use and how long ago?
