Q: Can we amplify light from various sources say light from a bulb?: Yes, that is where we get lasers. I think Laser is actually an acronym for Light Amplified by the Stimulation and Emission of Radiation.

Q: You often here that light from other galaxies travelled 100 light years or a million light years.How do they figure out how old light is that reaches earth?: Good question! They can tell the distance to nearby stars by watching for parallax; that is the change in the star's apparent position in two observations six months apart. Since the Earth is on opposite sides of its orbit, the closest stars shift slightly in position. There is even a unit of distance called a parsec, which is the range for an object to be to have one arc-second (1/3600 of a degree) of parallax; 'parsec' is short for 'parallax second'. A parsec is 3.26163626 light years according to Google. (The nearest known planet outside our solar system is about 10.5 light years away, or roughly 3 parsecs.) Of course, with really distant objects that won't work. In those cases astronomers look carefully at the spectrum of the light. It includes bright or dark bands at known positions, from the emission or absorption spectra of various elements. It is also known that, since space itself is expanding, that the further an object is away from us the more it will appear to be moving away (although it isn't really; space is actually getting bigger). This has the effect of stretching light waves from distant stars, which shifts the colour spectrum toward the red end of the spectrum. This red-shift can be measured, and used to calculate the apparent speed of the star, and from there determine how far away the light source is, and therefore how old the light is. Of course, the distance scale needs to be calibrated. Conveniently, there is a kind of exploding star called a Type 1A supernova which, because of the way it occurs, always has about the same luminosity. So by looking across many, many galaxies for the light signature of Type 1A supernovas, and measuring their apparent brightness, it's possible to determine the distance to them directly. Then, by looking at their redshift, you can figure out how much the universe is expanding and use that as a guideline for determing distance with red shift. And there you have it.

Q: i have lights on trailer but no brake lights or turn signals it is a 4 prong hook up: The colour code for trailers is as follows, white-ground, brown-running, yellow-left turn, green-right turn and blue would be for trailer brakes if your trailer has them or auxiliary. If your adapter (on the Dakota) is hooked up properly those are the wire colours that run from your vehicle into the trailer lights and the signal lights will also be the brake lights.

Q: what do you call the emergency lights in a car in spanish: On the colum switch,or dash switch,whichever you have the light switch has three positions,1 is off,2 is side lights and 3 is headlights. The rear fog light will only come on,separate switch,when the light switch is in position 3,ie head lights. Side lights I'd only use when parked up but you better have a good battery!,and usually only on a say dark road just to show I'm there! Mostly it's mains,as soon as the street lights are on,or in poor visibility.fogs only when there is fog,and put it off as soon as possible,it could be confused with a brake light from the back. There used to be regulation about parking on an unlit road and side lights,not sure if they are still in force but I've never heard of anyone being charged with the offence. And there are a number of cars that if you leave the indicator stalk in the left turn position and remove the key then the front and rear side lights will stay on,vise versa for right turn.,seem to recall that was a German road Traffic reg. Or if your a biker?lights on always.

Q: is a glow in the dark rubber ball a light source?: your textbook may have made a semantic distinction amongst different things that emit light (and if so, use the textbook's rules!), but i'd say that if something is emitting photons (even if temporarily) then it's a light source - so YES! OTOH, the glow-in-the-dark-ball is just remitting some fraction of the light it absorbed some minutes ago. in that sense, i can see how your teacher might put such a ball in the category of *not* a pure source, but just a reemitter... then again, light bulbs convert electrical energy into light (and are a light source i think) and your rubber ball is reemitting absorbed light. so, i can see it both ways actually. check w/ your textbook... off the cuff though, i'd say Yes. it emits light, so it's a light source. cheers
