Q: I‘ve prepared a plastic container with a couple of holes. Can I use potting soil instead of vermiculite? will the eggs be lack of oxygen if i close the lid?
Potting soil is fine, so long as it is sterile. Use steam to sterilize it. The box will have plenty of air. The main problem is drying out. If you have a good scale, weigh the box every so often and add a ml of water for each gram of weight lost. If you don't, just wing it.
Q: Can coarse sand replace vermiculite?
Sand can replace the vermiculite, but thick enough, at least in mung bean.
Q: I have a gravid female and i have and incubator set up. the incubator is a simple container with sand, a container with vermiculite and a heat mat. I also have a theremomitor. how can i keep the tempurture at a constant temp.? I have it jumping around from 85-95 how do i keep it at the same tempurature? She is about to lay. All answers are appriciated.
either transmission fluid or gear oil and not many are sealed to where you can add fluid to it or drain it some of the new car have sealed auto ones but most manual have gear oil and can be drain and added to easy
Q: Hey, I live in Nashville, Tennesse and I‘ve found a five-lined skink - whom I believe is a young juvenile - and have been taking of it so far with the basic tropical kit from Zilla products. I leave the heatlamp on for about twelve hours a day and mist his tank with a spray bottle of water to maintain a humidity of around 60-80. I‘ve also got him this miniature mountain that goes to his water bowl. Their is a cave inside of the mini-mountain that he enjoys to go in. Other than that, he‘s either eating crickets (so far the only thing I‘ve been giving him, thinking of introducing him to waxworms and mealworms?), roaming around the surface of the mulch and climbing around xD, or tunneling underground ooSo what do you guys think - do I have a good set up for him? Any tips or suggestions? Am I doing something wrong or forgetting something? Anything I should prepare for or whatever? D
They are not bad for your hair if you put a product that protects your hair. I have a CHI too if you go to a place that sells hair products they have a product specifically made for the CHI. it is in a red bottle and it sprays on your hair.
Q: I looked at the Wikipedia article on vermiculite, and it wasn't clear whether it contained asbestos or not. Would it be safe for me to put on a mask and scoop the stuff up, then vacuum up the rest?
Make your own. Use compost and some slightly acidic peat. Make sure it drains easily.
Q: My daughter found what appear to be lizard eggs and we rescued them from being cushed by the dog before we looked it up on line. I am pretty sure we have flipped them. Is there anything we can do?
Get some milk and scramble them because you've destroyed their innocent lives.
Q: small balls that soaks up water.what are they called?
Definitely get rid of the park soil. It could be full of pesticides and parasites. It could do more harm than good. You should use a substrate from your pet store. It is cleaned thoroughly. Since you can't find peat/vermiculite, I would suggest a coconut fiber such as (Bed-a-Beast). It holds moisture well which will give you a decent humidity level. Other than that, just give it some time. Give a few days to adjust and make itself at home. I wouldn't even try to feed it for the first few days. Once it is more relaxed and comfy with it's new surroundings, it should find it's favorite place and be ready to eat.
Q: What kind of soil should be used in planting stem cutting plants?
It somewhat depends on the variety of plant that you want to root cuttings from - some plants will root in water, though this will just cause rot in most. Generally, I keep some gritty sand, vermiculite and perlite, which I mix with good sterilised soil or potting compost - the ratio of the mix I vary, according to the plant. These ingredients increase the amount of air that's in the growing medium, as well as assist with drainage. Edit your question of you've got some specific plants that you want to propagate, and we can answer you more specifically. Don't use builders sand, but get all of these products from a garden nursery or products supplier. The reason for using sterilised products is to ensure that you don't introduce the chance for infections to set in - new cuttings go through a stress period, after being cut from the parent plant, and are somewhat more susceptible to infections. Some plants are tough as old boots, and it hardly matters, but I always like to improve my success rates, and prevent waste. Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Q: I am teaching a children's art class and want to do a sculpture project with the kids. Some who have signed up are small and I am leary of giving them sharper tools to carve the plaster blocks I am making. I have instructions on mixing the plaster with vermiculite to make the plaster softer/slow down drying time. I have only found perlite- which is the same gardening-wise but I'm wondering if it will be the same for my purposes. I have found out vermiculite is clay based whereas perlite is rock I'm guessing I can experiment but figured I'd give a quick shout out first! Thanks!
vermiculite and perlite are two different things, but I don't believe either one is toxic. Vermiculite is what happens when the mineral mica is heated, perlite is a naturaly occuring mineral of volcanic origin. However, if you dry it out in your oven, depending on how much of it you have, I would not have the oven over 150 degrees. And have adequate ventilation. It may take overnight, again depending on how much of it there is. Just keep stirring it occasionally, and keep checking to see how fast it is drying.
