Q: Hi I have low Iron in my blood. And I was wondering if it‘s bad. My doctor said my Iron was on the low side. He advised me to take Iron pills but I rather not. I can still get more I ron to my blood from eating high in iron foods a lot right? Oh and can you name me some no too fatty or fat free iron foods please. I‘m a bit worried.
raw spinach or broccoli are great sources of iron which have no fat. Meat also has iron but obviously that's pretty fatty. Most green, leafy vegetables have iron. I eat a spoonful of molasses every day to keep mine up because I don't like iron pills. It's bad that you don't have iron in your blood because the iron in your blood is what carries the oxygen around in it to your tissues so if you don't have enough iron you might not be getting enough oxygen or your body might have to work harder to get the oxygen that it needs. This can make you feel weak or tired. It can also make you bruise more easily. But yeah, you can skip out on the pills usually if you eat lots of green, leafy vegetables and occasionally some meat.

Iron pills can be very helpful if you are anemic.They can also be very dangerous if taken in large amounts! They can also cause constipation.My advice would be to take recommended dose for a couple of weeks and then to change your diet.Drinking fresh orange juice can help if you are eating properly as vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. A simple sandwich of corned beef and sliced tomato is a great iron booster! And please keep the iron pills as far out of childrens reach as possible.

I've tried the brown paper trick and it didn't work - if your iron is teflon coated or stainless steel the SOS pads will scratch the finish. What I use is a scrubber sponge with the green scrub pads on the back of the sponge. Use warm water and soap, scrub with the green side until the debris is gone, rinse out the sponge then give the surface a swipe with the sponge side. You may have to do this with the iron set to a low heat level to help soften / loosen the debris depending on how bad it is.

Mine is borderline now - right between low and normal. It's great that you are paying close attention to your levels - when my iron is low, my blood pressure goes way down too. You'll need to monitor that as you get older. I think you are too young for vitamins, but if you need to take something that will boost your iron immediately, take Floradix Iron - You can get it at any health food store. It's like a sweet fruit juice syrup that you store in the fridge -- you have to use up the whole bottle in the time specified, about 2 or 3 weeks. Oh, and be sure to brush your teeth after taking it so you don't look like you swallowed a bunch of ink! ;) Also, make some dietary changes. I know FOR SURE, that eating 1 cup of red grapes every single day will have your iron up in no time at all. Also try foods that are rich in iron, like beets and spinach. If at any point in your life, you end up taking iron supplements, I just want to caution youIf you ever find that, when you go to the bathroom, your 'waste' (for lack of a more dignified word ;) appears to have little black specks in it - kind of like sandthen that's your cue to know that your body is not absorbing the supplement. The black stuff is actually unabsorbed iron. You're so young - now is the time to learn to take good care of yourself and start healty practices that you will maintain for the rest of your life. Work on that diet, and you'll be better in no time! Take care. :)
