Thankyou!: I have protected young garden plants with deer netting. Usually I cover a row about 3.5 foot wide at a height of about 15 inches. I remove the netting when the plants get too tall, but usually I have had most problems with deer or rabbits when plants are very small. Deer Netting is a 3/4 inch mesh, black plastic netting that comes in 7 ft wide by 100 ft long rolls and is reasonably priced. I build a simple wood structure of 1'' by 2'' lumber to hold it up and fasten it to the ground with garden or landscape fabric staples. This is described in more detail in the article link below. On taller things like a fencing I have cucumbers climb on, I have hung chunks of smelly soap, strips of dryer fabrics sheets, and sprayed with various homemade repellent sprays (recipes found on line, see second link below for examples). Sometimes I also lean additional sections of fencing against the first one until the cucumbers are well established. I have also made small tents of window screening for widely spaced individual plants. Good luck!

Even better for vegetable gardens is Hay, or Wheat straw, same thing. It keeps moisture in the soil, keeps weeds from sprouting and attracts beneficial spiders that will eat all the vegetable eating insects.
