- Q: I am working on a project and want to slide a small length of aluminum tubing over a wooden dowelThe inside diameter of the aluminum tubing is about five thousandths smaller than the outside diameter of the dowelIdeally I'd like to have the two locked tightly together with no fasteners.I've tried freezing the wood in a freezer, but it didn't shrink any noticeable amountI've tried heating the aluminum to expand it, which didn't do much and it scorched the wood really bad when I tried to push the dowel inIf I have to I'll just sand the dowel to the correct diameter and use some screws or pins to hold it, but I thought I'd fish for ideas here firstI'm usually trying to STOP wood from shrinking, not force it.
