- Q: I will be doing my first tile job soon. I will be removing/replacing the tile on my kitchen countertop. I have got most everything figured out with the exception of removing the existing tile on the backsplash. I believe the tile was placed directly over sheet rock (tract home). Any suggestions on how to remove the tile without too much damage to the sheetrock. If I have to do sheetrock replacement I don‘t think I could ever duplicate the texture now applied to the surronding sheet rock Thanks for any tips.
- Well you can use a hammer and a 1/2 chisel with safety glasses to start. As for sheetrock replacement...since it will be under the tile, the texture wont be seen and shouldnt be a problem. The coat that you will use to adhere the tile to the sheetrock will cover any inperfections caused by the tile removal. Are you talking about sheetrock or wonderboard?, sheetrock is also called drywall. If the base behind the tile is a hard ,cement based backing then just adhere the tile to that. I have never heard of anybody setting tile to sheetrock since it isnt waterproof. Good luck.

- Q: I have 12x12 field tile and a strip of accent that‘s about 2 high. Everything I‘ve read says that you want to have the accent at eye level, which makes sense to me. Judging for myself, it LOOKS best at eye level. If I place it at eye level, I wind up with a full 12x12 tile above it, or at least, a 12 space above it. So going down to the tub, I would have a 2 1/2 cut tile at the bottom, right above the tub.Everything I have read also says that you want to have the cut tiles at the top and bottom symmetrical.
- Provided the tub is fairly level, start a full tile at the bottom and work up. Tile will look fine at a 5 or six foot level ( I prefer 5 ft.) Not every one has the same eye level so the strip will be fine. The tub surround will be a bit different too so what I suggest is measuring on the tub wall the tile heights and stand back and look at it. Use a pc of tape the approx width of the strip and tape it or draw it on the tub wall s prior to tiling. Will give you a better idea. - Yes, if you want the tile job to hold up. The backer board must be water resistant because of the location. It is rigid and gives a firm solid surface to lay the tiles on - otherwise they'll eventually start coming off and you'll have to re-do the job.
- Q: I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? - vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape,you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day,whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........

- You just get a chisel and a hammer and pry them from the wall. If they are on concrete, then you use a really big chisel and hammer. *The sheetrock may come down with the tile.
