- Q: I got these tiles at a yard sale. They appear to be very old, hand painted and likely of Mexican origin. The label is tattered and faded, but I would love to know more about them. Thanks for any info in advance.
- Very nice and I am sure that once you put them up you will love the vintage old world look that they will give your room. Have fun!
- Q: I was quoted $5.75 for tile install and $2.25 for concrete board per square foot.
- The best way to determine the reasonableness of a quote is to bid out the job. This means call at least three separate contractors and get quotes for the job. Make sure that they are bidding on comparable services, ask about their process, experience, lincense/insurance, and materials they will use. Not only will you gtet a good idea of the price, but you'll also be able to pick the most competent of the contractors. Your question does not have enough information to tell you whether or not your quote was within reason. There is a big difference between installing 12 x 12 tiles on a big flat floor and installing mosaic pieces on a vertical wall, for example. Glass and natural stone tiles are harder to work with. Smaller spaces are more time consuming per sq foot, etc. If materials are not included, your price seems a bit high for a basic install on a prepped, horizontal surface. But, like I said, depending on the details, the price could be very good.
- Q: I am doing my bathroom slate and i need a bullnose tile. I special ordered it at Home Depot and now they are telling me it is discontinued. I was wondering if anyone new of a web site or store that i could order this from because my bathroom is supposed to be started Monday and Now i dont have the bull nose... please help??
- Well, most natural stone companies believe it or not do not make a bullnose. At least in the midwest I have yet to see one yet. If there are any tiles left at home depot you can by a few extra pcs and make bullnose. There is a bullnose blade that can be attached to a wet saw to make the cut what it does is just creates a rounded edge to form a bullnose. However the blade is expensive so you can see if there are any contractors in your area who may do this kind of job and already the correct tools to create a bullnose. That is if the tile isn't dicontinued.
- Q: How is the acceptance of tiles after construction?
- First knock! The sound is empty! Indicating that the cement did not wipe evenly. There is a place where there is leakage. In touch! Tile connection is smooth! If the tiles are not flat, it shows that the cement gray is not even! Look after! Tile joints should be horizontal and vertical.
- Q: If you butt the all the tiles without any spacing, will the tile crack or bubble up due the expand and contract?
- Tile Without Grout Lines
- Q: I have thinset my slate tiles in place, and washed any thin set off as best as I can with water. I can‘t seem to get some of the thinset marks off, how important is this? Also, how long should I let the tiles dry before I can seal them? (I want to seal before grouting). One last thing, my sealer product says to grout 2 hours after sealing? This seems fast...will the sealer be dry enough?
- Ideally you could have sealed your slate before setting (as long as you kept the sealer off the edges of the tiles). This would have made thinset and grout clean-up much easier. You really need to get all the thinset off your tiles. At this point you might need some hot water, a scrungy pad and some elbow grease. If that doesn't do it then you'll need to use a cleaning solution - maybe they have something where you bought the slate (make sure it's safe for natural stone). So after the tiles are thinset free, you can seal - again only the tops of the tile. If sealer gets down the sides your grout will not grab hold as well. Apply enough sealer to coat, but avoid puddling. You can grout after 2 hrs - but you can wait longer if you like. I would seal your grout after it dries as well. Hope this helped... Rich

- Q: standard terracotta tiles
- around 15 lbs per square foot
- Q: What are the pros and cons for using porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?
- They are both basically the same, my husband remodels and he has used both on many locations. It is all about your taste and finding something you like and can live with for a long time. As long as you seal it (as often as recomended) any tile will last a long time unless chipped or cracked. You'll probably get tired of it before you actually need to change it. They say porcelain is better for damp areas but we have used both in bathrooms with no problems so far. It's the grout that must be sealed and it's not that costly Lowe's and Home Depot can tell you the best sealant to use and you could do it yourself at a considerable cheaper price.
