A hose is attached to the fire hydrant, then the valve is opened to provide a powerful flow of water, on the order of 350 kPa (50 lbf/in²) (this pressure varies according to region and depends on various factors including the size and location of the attached water main). This hose can be further attached to a fire engine, which can then use a powerful pump to boost the water pressure and possibly split it into multiple streams. The hose may be connected with a threaded connection, instantaneous "quick" connector or a Storz connector. Care should be taken not to open or close a fire hydrant too quickly, as this can create a water hammer which can damage nearby pipes and equipment. The water inside a charged hoseline causes it to be very heavy and high water pressure causes it to be stiff and unable to make a tight turn while pressurized.
- Q: The hot and cold water supplies under my kitchen sink are two solid PVC pipes. The hot and cold are reversed and connect directly into my kitchen faucet, so I would like to cut the pipes and add some flexible supply line (and maybe shutoff valves). My question is, how do I cut and attach the flexible lines to the PVC pipe? I'm assuming I just use a hacksaw to cut the pipe, but how do I add the shutoff valve/flexible line? Is there some sort of compression fitting that I can buy and attach to the cut PVC that will add a threaded connection so I can screw the valve and line onto it?
- We know not to park next to a hydrant because: a) hydrants exist, and b) the punishment is fairly immediate and tangible. Why do most of us not believe in Hell? Because: a) it doesn't exist; and b) it's part of a story about something that doesn't exist; and c) vague threats that are not backed up by evidence tend not to impress people. It's interesting that the nontangible threat of eternal damnation has replaced the immediate wrath and smitery described in the Old Testament. Presumably this is because people were getting wise to the fact that nobody ever saw this stuff happen BQ: religion tends to be elitist. Followers of one religion might be quite happy that other people don't have the same belief, because this allows the my imaginary deity is better than your imaginary deity smugness that we occasionally see here on RS. So they don't see the fact that most people don't believe in their deity as a problem.

- HI there, Your copper pipe is probably a type L copper pipe used in residential above ground water or gas piping systems. The outside diameter is 5/8 inch (0.625) and is designed to be used with a brass swedge (flair) fitting, sweat (soldered) or compression fittings. See link below for specs. We used a lot of k copper piping in industry (which has the same dimentions) with swedge, compression and silver soldered joints. You got it right, Al
- Q: I accidentally burnt some food earlier on, and the fire alarm went off, and it was very loud, the whole street would be able to hear it. I went to the fire alarm control panel in the hall and managed to find out how to silence it. But the 'Fire' LED red light is still on, so it thinks there is a fire. I don't want to press anything on it in case it goes off again, in which case the neighbors will be pissed off because it is very late. Is it safe to keep it on 'SILENCED' for now? It's a student house and i'm the only one here, and the landlord is away. So there isn't much I can do, and I don't want it to go off again by fiddling with it because if it does i'm convinced the entire block will hear it and be waked up.So it is safe to keep it on silenced, even though the bright red light next to 'FIRE' is on?
