If it is a PVC or CPVC or copper pipe, doesn't matter. Forget that glue and forget the soddering, you don't need to do any of that. Turn off the main water switch, open the lines and let the water drain then you cut out the part that is broken from the pipe. Home depot sells a product called SharkBite. It is literarly a connector for pipes with snap on fittings. Measure the pipe and get a SharkBite - 1/2 inch or 1 pipe or 2 inch pipe, just measure the pipe, ok? Position the SB onto the pipe, (make sure you snap it in really well until it pops) and turn the water back on. That's it. The guys at HD can tell you which one to get.

Some hookah hoses are rubber, right, so its not going to kill me and im not directly lightinh it on fire so i wont die right?: Sorry to disappoint you, but the device a Firefighter uses to TEMPORARILY shut off or reduce a leak on a fire line IN SERVICE is a Fire Hose Jacket (See Akron Brass 772) and it is placed around the Soft Pliable fire hose and closed over it, so that the internal pressure pushes the side of the hose against the gasket inside the Rigid Fire Hose Jacket with the hose at what are, when compared to the oil well application, relatively LOW Pressures. The design of most municipal fire hoses to day is such that although these devices are still around they are not used very widely anymore. That is NOT the case with the Gulf Oil Well leak it is under EXTREME PRESSURE, that would make it virtually impossible to get a similar device in place. The problem is that the extreme pressure would be forcing any patch away from the pipe with such force that is could not be over come until you had a GREATER force. What they are attempting to do with the TWO additional wells is to provide an alternate less restrictive (EASIER) route for that oil pressure to release with a bigger volume of flow that should hpefully allow the pressure to drop at the original well, thus allowing them to deal with repairing or capping it.

Q: How far from a fire hydrant can you park in NJ?: 1 Nominal Pipe Size [edited] - I knew I should have written a longer answer. nominal means exactly that - in name only. In order to make life easier for everybody, all 1 PVC pipe has the same outside diameter - 1.315. This makes it possible to interchange fittings and to switch pipe sizes when needed. The wall thickness does vary and so, for sch 40, 80, 120 in that order the inside diameter is: 1.029, .936, and .891. You might ask why anyone would mix sizes since either the size you choose can take the pressure or it can't. Often Schedule 80 is used to stiffness rather than pressure. Many sprinkler systems are sched 40 underground but switch to sched 80 for risers where the strength is important.

Q: the smoke detector here goes off every few nights. while interconnected, only 2 out of the 6 go off, and they all have fresh batteries and have been replaced. (yesterday) none of them are near enough to other sources to cause them to be going off. any ideas?: Not sure what you have there, but flex pipe usually has Pipe threads on both ends. Some ( when designed to hook up gas appliances ) have Flare fittings on each end. If you intend to use the flex for water, any connector will do, but if you want to run Propane or Natural gas through it, you have to use either black pipe of Flare fittings. ( For black pipe, besure to use a good sealant to prevent leaking ) You should head out to the local hardware store or Home Center and talk to the guys there. Tell them what you are trying to accomplish, and follow their recommendations. Good Luck

Had a arbitrator hearing a year later with a lawyer given to me four day before hearing who know nothing about the case and the arbitration rule for the company. I ask the local union to appeal the hearing because the company withheld the witness who saw the hold thing from the arbitration. i ask them to appeal it, but they refuse to do so. Any Suggest?: It's not. The ports are all marked on filters these days. Inlet means in to filter from pump. Waste is backwash (if a sand filter). Outlet goes to heater, chlorinator and then pool return stub out. The front of the pump is where your suction (from pool stub out) goes. Top of pump goes to filter. Just make sure you have all the plumbing fittings and pipe handy. A roll of teflon tape as well. If this is all poly plumbing you'll need a propane torch to heat the pipe at the fittings and gear clamps.

First, to get it out of the way, do not call this guy back again, as he is ripping you off. Drain cleaning chemicals are intended to dissolve, or at least loosen, clogs such as grease, hair, soap, etc., but not ice. Yes, ice can form in drain lines, especially if not nicely sloped (where there's a sag in a straight run), or at a fitting. Once started, it can accumulate - that's how icicles are formed, a little a time. If the drain pipe leaving the kitchen (likely 1 1/2 pipe) is enclosed above the garage, I'd open up the garage ceiling (if finished), or perhaps the chase it's boxed in with, and warm the pipe with hot air, to get things going. Once done with that, get some insulation under the pipe (in effect getting the pipe into the envelope of the house, not below it). I agree that the yellowish leak may well be the drain cleaner, but the leak also betrays - a leak. Any and all fittings should be inspected. Worst case is actually a cracked drain pipe from the ice, and steel drain pipe (very not likely). PVC or ABS plastic drain pipe is quick and economical to cut out and repair, so buck up. (Personally, I would also exit with an access panel for the next time, not just sealing up with a drywall repair.) In the coldest climates, some might use pipe heating tape as a preventative measure, but I suspect you aren't in one, just caught in this nasty weather. The tape, however is not a good solution to an already-frozen line - it's too slow.

Q: What are some good lab safety rules? Are the Physics rules any different from that of Biology or Chemistry?: I don't know that this is a vent pipe. We get this problem when we run hot water. The hot water makes the copper pipes expand. When our addition was built, the plumber should have used fittings that did not cause this problem. Unless you want to open up the walls, you're stuck with it. In our case, it makes as much noise in the summer as it does now.
