Q: Whats the difference between quartz and callcite?: Well that's for your own safety really, the tailings piles will usually have quite a few hidden gems (pun intended) as well, some of my best samples have come from those same piles. If you want really big quartz you'll need to go out further west, and even then it's gonna be tough to find, most people closely guard their rockhounding sites.

They are good channelers for energy though and that is why they are often put in watches nowadays. Having mystical powers is not really in Quartz's scope, because 1) they are usually impure materials 2) they are not crafted to do anything and 3) because magic rocks are usually attributed in mythology as being rubies or emeralds and such. If you are thinking about the legends of the Crystal Skulls, the power of the skulls are more phycological effects by finding a peaceful place because of the pretty colors inside of the rocks. The magic does not come from the rock. There is no way to harness a piece of quartz's magic energy because it is just a piece of rock. They look cool, but there isn't anything radioactive or paranormal about quartz. Sorry to disappoint.

And was does the anti-skate knob do as well?: You have to examine it closely with a hand lens. If you can remove individual grains and do a hardness test, so much the better. What kind of rock are you talking about, and just how technical do you want to get with the compositional analysis?

O is always present in micas, and Si is usually present, but otherwise you have a long list of different elements that can make up the rest of the mineral. Common forms of mica include Muscovite and Biotite. Since I don't know the exact chemical composition of these I'll link the wikipedia section on those two minerals.
