Q: Want to construct a patio cover approx. 20 feet long. Only want to use a 6x6 or 8x8 post at each end. What size steel i-beam would I have to use to carry the load???
Probably the reason some contractors don't like this idea is that your new built-up beam, being only 6 tall, is not going to allow the joists above to attach effectively. The triple microlam with steel plates is sooooooo overkill in strength, but doesn't have the height to allow the floor joists to proberly attach. Your span is not so great that a built-up beam wouldn't work great. Assuming that your second floor joists are 2 x 10, I would use 2- 2 x 10 with 1/2 plywood sandwiched between. This is all that you really need.
Q: Can you use regular welding rods when welding stainless steel?Thank you.
You would use stainless steel rod. I have used stainless safety wire that you can buy at the hardware store or Harbor Freight. (Assuming you are TIG welding). I have found that for small jobs it works quite well.
Q: Hello, Do I make any damage to my stainless steel sink by cleaning it with clorox? Thank you!
I think not. I owned stainless steel sinks before that were they were in style. I used Clorox and more on them and they always turned out great. found wiping them out with a paper towel made them shine.
Q: When steel is cast, does it become weaker/more brittle or anything of this nature? what are the side effects of steel casting on the steel itself? How can you correct these?
It contains too many air bubble spacing and too many impurity that make it easily to be broken apart. Melt it down again with high heat to remove most impurity, after this process,it becomes iron.
Q: which type of carbon steel does not have manganese
None. Mn is a trace impurity in all steels, if you look carefully enough. If you want to find a steel where Mn is not intentionally added, start looking at the alloy composition specifications, there are hundreds of steels. Why are you worried about Mn? Mn is typically added to steels for a very good reason.
Q: How are steel coils used in the production of rail tracks?
Steel coils are used in the production of rail tracks as they are a primary raw material for manufacturing the rails. These coils are first processed to form the desired shape and dimensions of the rail tracks, which are then cut, welded, and shaped to create the individual rail sections. The steel coils provide the strength, durability, and flexibility necessary for the tracks to withstand heavy loads, extreme weather conditions, and constant use.
Q: I moved into a house which has a steel front door. When I touch the door it feels very cold to the touch in the winter. There is a storm door also and the weather stripping looks good.Cold air from the door is entering the lower level. The house is about 20 yrs old.
Steel doors are insulated, but will feel cold in the winter.Feel all around the door weather stripping area and the seal at the bottom of the door to see if air is getting in.
Q: What are the common defects in steel coil finishes?
There are several common defects that can occur in steel coil finishes. These defects can impact the appearance and functionality of the steel and may need to be addressed before the coil can be used or sold. 1. Coil breaks: Coil breaks are a common defect where the steel strip breaks during winding or unwinding. This defect can result in a discontinuity in the surface of the coil and can lead to further damage if not addressed. 2. Edge wave: Edge wave refers to a distortion or waviness at the edges of the steel coil. This defect can occur during the rolling or cooling process and can affect the flatness and uniformity of the coil. 3. Corrosion: Corrosion can occur on the surface of steel coils if they are not properly protected or stored. This can lead to rust and degradation of the steel, impacting its strength and appearance. 4. Streaks and stains: Streaks and stains can occur on the surface of steel coils due to improper cleaning or contamination during the production process. These defects can affect the aesthetic appearance of the steel and may need to be addressed before the coil can be used. 5. Scratches and dents: Scratches and dents can occur on the surface of steel coils during handling, transportation, or storage. These defects can impact the flatness and surface quality of the steel and may require repairs or adjustments. 6. Coating defects: If the steel coil has a coating or paint applied to it, several defects can occur. These include blistering, peeling, or uneven application of the coating, which can affect the durability and appearance of the steel. It is important to note that these defects can vary in severity and may require different methods of repair or mitigation. Regular inspections and quality control measures can help identify and address these defects before they become more significant issues.
Q: So we all know a 1000lb steel ball will sink in water, but if you were to leave the center of the ball hollow and fill with air, if the steel ball was big enough in diameter it should float correct? What size would the steel ball need to be to float?
specific gravity of a steel is approximately 7.82 as compared to water. so, the hollow sphere(filled with air) is having volume more by 7.82 as compared to solid sphere, then the 1000 lb hollow steel ball float in the water (Why Do Ships Float? The Greek Mathematician and inventor Archimedes lived during the 3rd century BC. According to history he was in the bath one day when he discovered the principle of buoyancy which is the reason why huge Greek ships weighing thousands of pounds could float on water. He noticed that as he lowered himself into the bath, the water displaced by his body overflowed the sides and he realised that there was a relationship between his weight and the volume of water displaced. It is said that he ran naked into the street yelling heurEka which is where we get our word eureka! (I found it), Greek heurEka I have found, from heuriskein to find. The Buoyancy Principle: Archimedes continued to do more experiments and came up with a buoyancy principle, that a ship will float when the weight of the water it displaces equals the weight of the ship and anything will float if it is shaped to displace its own weight of water before it reaches the point where it will submerge. This is kind of a technical way of looking at it. A ship that is launched sinks into the sea until the weight of the water it displaces is equal to its own weight. As the ship is loaded, it sinks deeper, displacing more water, and so the magnitude of the buoyant force continuously matches the weight of the ship and its cargo.)
Q: What are the different cutting methods for steel coils?
There are several different cutting methods for steel coils, including shearing, slitting, and laser cutting. Shearing involves using a large blade to cut through the coil, typically resulting in a straight cut. Slitting involves passing the coil through circular blades that create narrower strips or sheets. Laser cutting uses a high-powered laser beam to melt or vaporize the steel, providing precise and intricate cuts. Each method has its advantages and is chosen based on the specific requirements of the project.
