Q: Cement. We all use it! Look out at your neighbourhood... Cement fences, pathways, houses!!! What is your opinion on another cement plant being built?: I dont understand what you mean? We have many cement plants and we use the stuff because its fairly cheap and does a great job. The thing about cement is that its very expensive to transport so most cement companies will setup shop near a port or rail transportation (since those are cheaper than by truck) and will setup near where it will be used a lot. I dont think there is a shortage, there's naturally plenty of stuff to make cement.

Q: The walls behind my tub have rotted out, and I want to put it tile. I hear that you have to use cement backerboard because greenboard will just rot behind the tile. But all the stores around here don't sell it. I don't get it. Is this really what I need?: Obviously the 1st poster isn t a tiler. For the best protection ( after you fix the rotting if need be) use a green board and then a vapor barrier and then cement board 1/2 thick. Grout IS NOTTT water proof , its a cement product and will draw moisture thru to the underlaying board and rot plaster board or green board ventually. Look around you ll find the cement board somewhere . You ll need a special trim to cover but thats the best way. Q: There just little pieces of cement no bigger then a nickel and it made the glass look all foggy and nasty and I was wondering if there like a chemical compound or something I can use to break it down. If there is, is there anyway you can make it at home using household products? Please and Thank You: You can use muriatic acid to break down the cement on the glass block. Keep in mind that it is acid and you might have to dilute to not harm anything including the glass, but it should break it down enough to remove it. We have used it to break up mortar off of tools and such by submersion.

Q: im retieling my bathroom floor some of the old cement board is coming but not all of it .Can i just put a layer of thin set over it and then build up where i did get the cement board off?: If its 1/2 cement board you should use a better cement product than thin set. Thin set isn t meant to be used 1/2 thick. Couple of options.. Finish taking it out (PIA I know) , repair what you ve ripped out so far, or use thin set in two pours so it isn t as thick in one pore. Let it dry a couple (several) days. This allows all the moisture to leave and no other shrinkage will occur.. You still may have to do another smooth coat to make it flat.. Depends on how big this repair is.. Thin set, in a large area, loses its compression strength and will crumble over time.. No one can really say because you don t say the size of area to be done.. And something so i can remove it if i dont like it...cause what iv heard it looks like polythurene: Quick lesson.........cement is the powder in the concrete. To make concrete glossy, they have several sealers that will do the trick. Some are as simple as Thompsons water seal(junkie tho) and others are a 2 part sealer that has a reaction when you mix together. That is by far the best to use. Go to a local material supplier. Typically ones that deal with mostly contractor supplies have the best products. Ask them for a sealer that they'd usually use over an exposed aggregate sidewalk. That is what you want. Far as removal......once it's on, it's on. It'll have to be recoated to keep it looking fresh and new. If you want to remove it, it'll have to be stripped off and that is a pain.

Q: i was just wondering, i also wasn't quite sure how to figure out how many pounds of force would be required.: I don't know , but it is not as hard as it looks. You need stable mounts and very good technique. The stones I use are patio pavers, 2x8x16. Stack two to get your specific dimension. Concrete is quite brittle, so a good, sharp strike will crack it. Because wood flexes, I find it easier to break two patio stones, than five boards.

IS THIS COMMON FOR 1950S BUILT HOUSE.: Hello It depends on its location the 50's not all areas had proper drainage or water supplies so maybe a well for water supply or a soak away for drainage as regards removal if want to remove intact you will need to break up the surrounding cement best way to do this to avoid damage would be to hire or borrow a Kango style demolition Hammer SDS Plus, they are relatively light weight and with the high vibration impacting movement you are less likely to damage the stone artifact, once surrounding cement removed you can try levering up with some scaffold poles or set up an A frame over the top and use a block and tackle to lift out, if however you want to just break up and remove take a 14 lb sledge hammer to it and cement over.
