- I can help a little. Land yachts of the 1880's had thick canvas sails. today sails are made of Dacron or in some cases Kevlar. The shape of the sails are much like an airfoil, and are designed to use the force of the wind to get the greatest push (resultant force). You can hoist it from the mast base or rig pulley's to the front. The mast is usually near the pivot point of the front axle. No sails on land yachts don't work at all into the wind. Only a little better down wind. it's when the wind is from the side that the highest R' is achieved. i don't think there sre many ways to do this, and I don't know what would work best.
