- Q: Hi, I want to put some solar light in my yard, and wondering if a 00w solar panel could work for a few 3w dc lights....do i need a battery so they run at night, if so how many lights do u think i can run/ also i see elading solar light
- 3 w for 2 hours/night is 36 watt hours. You'll get about 500 watt hours/day from your panel on the average, which for a 2 volt battery is about 40 ampere hours. You can get an 80 amp-hour sealed gel cell battery to charge with this panel (with a suitable charge controller). You want to size your lights so the battery can provide three days of light without discharging it more than 50%, so that's abnout 600 watt-hours/3/36 = about 4 orf 5 lights. Cost for this system woulkd be over $500. The advantage of the self contained light is they use a lithium or nickel battery rather than a lead acid, so it can run totally dead without damage (unmlike a sealed lead-acid battery). That would be a far cheaper way to go. DK

- Please excuse my bluntness, but you are not ready to ask these questions. This is a very complex issue. The how many question depends on what you expect of the system. Are you attempting to be off the grid? If so the system will have to supply all of your electrical needs, including those at night. You would need batteries. If you will be on the grid and want to supply all your electrical needs, your system will have to average the total daily usage. This will vary from one season to the next, so you will need to find out your annual usage. If you just want to reduce your electric bill, you need to pick the acceptable installation cost, and work with it to determine what it will buy In your shoes I would do some studying. - LOL!! There is a lot more to this than you might imagine. This is a very rough approximation but look at the attached and column labeled 6.3KW. Look down that column and you see where it says Est. First Year KWH Generated ,025. So if we were to assume that each month it will produce ,025/2 kwh. (not true for January but I am trying to keep this simple. The installed price without any rebates is $44,050. ;-) Sorry! You will find some a little cheaper... some a little more expensive but none are a LOT cheaper than this. (this price does not even include energy storage, so the sun goes down and you will stop producing electricity). This is why, when people start looking at this sort of thing, they always do what they can to conserve electricity first. It is always much cheaper to conserve, then worry about alternate energy.

- Photolvoltaic arry is the more technical name and the more accurate name for solar panels. Photo indicates light and voltaic indicates a voltage is produced.. Array is just a layout of these little light sensitive electricity generating panels. Actually Solar only idicates the SUN and not light in itself..
