- Running an oven or stove on solar is not a practicality; too much power is needed, use gas. Ditto, heating using solar electricity is not a practicality, and AC would also be asking a lot. The other things, within limits, might be do-able. You'll be needing as many solar panels as you can fit on. If I was you I'd consult a solar installer about how big your battery bank should be once you have decided how many Watts of panels you can put on.

- How much it costs, and whether it is worth it, really depends on where you live, and how much power you use. A very conservative house like ours, in an ideal area, could get by with a system that costs $5000 to $7500 net after incentives like tax credits. A house that uses a lot of energy, like a massive one with air conditioning, could need an array costing ten times that much. The only way to even get close on an estimate is to call a local solar installer for a quote. If there are no local solar installers, that's a clue that your area may not be very good for solar. Consider solar hot water also. That's generally cheaper and pays back faster than solar electric.
- Q: I've been figuring ways to keep water thawed out this winter, and this bucket seems to be the easiest thing. What kind of set up (solar panel) would I need to feed this 260 watt heated bucket?
- Unfortunately solar panels are low output,generally only 2 volt and very low amperage,so you would need to build a multi panel array with a DC-AC converter all together costing several hundred dollars which would only work during sunlight.Just roughly figuring,about $800. Plan2-Solar charger,battery bank,and DC-AC inverter so it would work 24hrs a day,also several hundred $$. Solar power does just not seem feasible(to me)in this application.By far the cheapest set up here would be an extension cord fromhouse to the bucket.260 watts per hr is a fairly lightweight draw,even not figuring the thermostat's cycling it on and off as needed.Electricity is sold in kilowatt hours(000W/hr).This bucket would use(not allowing for thermostats control lowering it)appx 6000watts or 6KW per day.Depending on your electrical cost per Kwh it would cost very little to run.(In my location appx 50cents a day) or appx the same amount as my computer(325watts total)) Note that that would be a maximum rate,and would actually be less due to thermostat cycling off and on as needed.

- They are wired into the power system much like the normal power from the local power co. That is simply stated as it can be a complex system with switching cercuits and computer control. Most home systems are more simple and in many cases the solar pannels realy only charge batteies. The ones that use them directly only feed them to certain curcits while the rest run off of the local power company. Solar systems still can't supply a lot of current so it takes a bunch of them to get much usable wattage.

- You can't buy at that level unless you are connected to governement. A lot of production is already spoken for for years to come. Where you live determines what you can legally buy and install. The EU has it's own certification, the US has 2 sets, the Canadians have their own. Your answer also requires knowing the use for the solar panels, whether it is grid-tie, off-grid or standalone to power an appliance. And you have to choose mono crystalline, poly crystalline, or thin-film.
- Q: Could you have a solar panel in space that would transmit electricity remotely? Maybe have some kind of receiving antenna to pick up the energy? Perhaps there could be a string of them orbiting the Earth?Why wouldn't that work?
- Hi There Solar panels work better in space than in the atmosphere and wireless transmission of power is now becoming possible but rarely practical. Currently more practical would be orbiting geo stationary large scale mirrors focusing light on panels on earth. In another 50 years who knows? Energy being transmitted wirelessly generates heat and radiation. I suspect that if a powerful enough solar array to meet earthly needs was put in orbit then transmitting that sort of power through the atmosphere would cause issues all of its own. Regards vk4ari
