Q: Hi, i want to please a solar panel in Lima Peru, my Latitude is -2 and longitude -77. I understand that since i am in the southern hemisphere, my panel should be pointing north. However, i am using a program called pvdesigner, and according to this, y should face my panel with and azimuth of 00degrees (0 = south) and a tilt of 60degrees. Does this make any sense?thanks
Typically, solar panels are installed facing the same as your latitude = 2 degrees to the North measured from horizontal. 60 degrees from vertical = 30 degrees from horzontal will give almost as much power in June as in December = beginning of Summer. You can face your panels straight up = zero tilt from vertical = better for December/ not so good in June. Usually, the same tilt as your North facing roof is best as it simplifies installation and reduces wind loading. Shade from trees etc will much reduce the power you get. Neil
Q: What do I need to use this as a battery charger
I hope this will help you choose your charge controller / battery charger more effectively. Good luck!
Q: I don't know anything about where to buy solar panels. I just want to save on the electric bills.
First and foremost, you are talking about photovoltaic panels. These harness solar energy and convert it to electricity. The downside to these is that they are expensive, although you will see a huge return on your electric bill in usually 5-7 years. The photovoltaic panels produce DC electricity, so if you want to power your home appliances you will need an inverter that takes DC electricity and converts it to AC (since almost all home appliances run off of AC). You will also need a battery and an optional but very useful charge controller. The battery stores electricity that is generated from the sun to be used on cloudy days. The charge controller is the brains of the operation and deciphers how much electricity should go to the appliance(s) or the battery.
Q: If I put a 5000 watt solar panel kit on my roof in Dublin (Ireland) - how much electricity would I realistically expect to get?An educated guess at a percentage of 5000w would do.
This is dependent on sun angle, clear sky, shadow interference, clouds, etc. First if you purchased the PV panels and they are rated for 5 kW, the factory rating is based on a particular incident energy, 000 watts/square meter, 25 degrees C and an AM of .5, reaching the panels. It is more likely that you will not obtain this same level in the open air. If we assume you will get 80%, then the maximum kW would be closer to 4kW. This will be produced during peak, clear days with the panels placed perpendicular to the sun at all times during peak radiance times. When the sun first comes up and later when it is going down, there will be more than the thickness of .5 atmospheres between you and the sun, so the radiant energy hitting the solar panels drops off. Total energy is watts time hours. I would expect you PV system to produce about 750 kW-Hr of energy during a clear summer day at peak solar height. Hope this helps, NewtonLaw
Q: I need a new roof soon and I was wondering what the difference in cost would be from a standard shingle roof to a roof including solar panels. Does anyone know the cost difference?
The solar panels are very expensive to provide much power. If u go that way do not skimp on the support as a high wind will blow them away. In Ecuador I put in a remote site for communications. It was working good when a Strong wind blew $0.000 worth of solar panels all over the jungle.
Q: Also, what's the solar panel's rate of producing electricity?
Solar panels really can't compete with fossil fuels of any kind. They're great for low power consumption applications, but I doubt we'll ever see solar powered steel refineries or heavy manufacturing plants. A solar panel that produces 75 watts is about 62 x 33 (5 feet by almost 3 feet). 75 watts is enough to power a couple light bulbs; you'd certainly never cook anything on it. On the other hand consider how much heat and light is produced by a small natural gas fireplace or stove burner. It would take a lot of those 5 foot long solar panels to equal that.
Q: I have had this 2v portable Solar Panel for my apartment for awhile. Only problem is that I have no balcony and I can barely get enough sun to use it with my Cobra 450 400-800 watt outlet converter. Can someone advise me a better method to use these? Like do I have to get more 2v solar panels? I have a small apartment and use it on one window. Also is it possible for me to buy a portable storage tank to store the energy gathered from the sun by the solar panel?
portable storage tank would be lead acid batteries. Use only marine sealed type for safety, about $300 each. You will need a charge controller to control the charging of the batteries. If you don't get enough sunlight, then the only alternative (aside from using the roof) is to get more panels. .
Q: right now, you would need a suitable number of solar panels just to power house that can take up a lot of real estate. so my question is, is it feasible to create something that absorbs more of the suns energy like a magnet it would suck it up. the point of doing this would be so that we wouldnt need so much space so many panels just to power home for example.i hope thats coherent.
we are near the edge of what is physically possible for solar power. You only get so many photons per area you know...and much of this is lost in entropy. Solar panels today are over 80% as efficient as what could ever be theoretically possible. No you will never get an easy solution to the land problem. lol what invisible talker suggests about using a black hole i suppose could be a way to increase the photons per area...but you would get much mroe power by using the tidal forces produced by a black hole than solar power heh...not to mention your panels will get sucked in...and whatever energy they produce wont be able to escape the black hole and power anything outside.
Q: For example, If I were powering my house with solar panels, would it be more efficient or effective, (or I guess would I get more energy) out of a day that measured 90 degrees Fahrenheit as opposed to a day that is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
no only the sunlight is used in generating electricity
Q: Can solar panels be installed on a university or college campus?
Yes, solar panels can absolutely be installed on a university or college campus. In fact, many educational institutions have already embraced solar energy and installed solar panels on their campuses. These panels can be placed on rooftops, parking structures, or open spaces to generate clean and renewable electricity. Installing solar panels not only helps reduce the environmental impact of the campus but also provides educational opportunities for students to learn about sustainable energy practices.
