Q: I thought they were going to make solar powered cars and solar power plants among other things. It was only nearly 0 years ago that solar power was the big thing. Just curious, why did it die out?
The technology did not die out. It is in fact quite alive and well, and there exist many different manufacturers of solar panels and devices utilizing them. The problem is that the technology has not yet advanced sufficiently to generate large amounts of power with solar panels, at least not with panels of any practical size and weight. You can easily buy a panel which will trickle-charge your car's battery during the day, but nothing that can generate anywhere near the power required to actually move a car's mass at any significant speed. You would need to buy panels with a very large surface area to make any significant amount of power, and these panels would be very heavy and very expensive.
Q: Solar Panels not working very well, they have faded. Is there any paint or anything else I can do to restore them? Thanks Eileen
Unfortunately Eileen the panels are bound to fade as its par for the course. Over time much like everything else (from an AC condenser to your knees and hips) everything starts to go south. When did you purchase and install your panels? If this was done within the past few years then something is definitely wrong, and you should have the manufacturer and installer come back and replace the panels....on their dime of course. Is the warranty on your panels still in effect? If so then its definitely something that they have to come back and take care of. There is a company I know of called Sun Electronics that has a 20 year warranty on their products, so if its worth anything you might want to buy your new panels/system from them. The panels around today are more efficient than those of years past, and with the cost coming down due to economies of scale and the tax incentives you might want to consider getting a new system. Q: My Grandfather just purchased a cheap solar panel kit for his ranch that could not muster enough power to run his mini fridge.He has two 6 volt batteries running positive to negative and would like to add more batteries. Probably 2volt. How would he go about hooking up the other batteries and what kind of wire or coil should he use.Also, I saw on youtube a guy recommending a lead-acid battery from walmart for under $20. I was just going to go to ecology and just pick up some used batteries but I may be wrong.Any help for a first timer might help me and my gramps out will be appreciated.Thank you
If he is going to be running off batteries at night, he would be better off with traction batteries. Traction batteries are true deep cycle and can better withstand deep discharge. Golf cart batteries at Sam's Club (the other half of Walmart) are traction batteries. If your grandfather needs safe refrigeration, a mini fridge won't do it. A 0 fridge takes too much power to run off solar panels and most won't hold their cold very well if unplugged for long. I run a fridge off grid with hybrid deep cycle marine starting batteries. It's an Engel 40. The price has gone up over $00 since I bought mine. It's a real fridge with a compressor and freon 34a. But it runs on 2v dc or 0vac and only uses 36 watts running because of a special compressor design. It will freeze food if you turn the dial down to 2 out of 5. It can also deep freeze. I use mine to keep eggs, milk, cheese and fruit juice. Your grandfather would need 400 amp-hours name plate rating of batteries at 2v to run the Engel, and probably 00 real watts of panels to recharge his battery bank. The Harbor Freight 45 watt panel set only puts out 30 watts on a clear cool day. That won't do it.
