- Q: My wife sent me to pick up some used floor tile. It still has the stuff (plaster? grout? whatever?) on the back of the tile. Can this be reused? Do I have to get the old stuff off? It is on there pretty uniformly.
- Yes it can be re-used, and thin set, or latex based mortars can be removed,,,with caution. I'm doing remediations constantly at one job site in a building prone to flooding. I have an ongoing part time career with 11,000 sq. ft. of tile.The tile used 2 years ago is no longer in stock, but continues to POP due to ground level water seepage. I use a Diag. Grinder, with a tile cutting blade, cut out grout, lift the tile, flip it, grind down the thinset to a reasonable level, and re-install. The bad news is the job is tedious. The good news is that the job is tedious,,, smiles. It saves the current floor however. Certainly, aside from safety precautions one might expect, the tile is fragile as well, and unless you have more, than you will use in this purchase which I always manage anyway, on a job site, by no less than 10% for waste, etc, You may find that treating the old tile as if it was a fresh egg is your best way to proceed. - They are cold and do not provide very firm footing. Dogs generally do not favor tile. Try some big area rugs to make the dog more comfortable,
- Q: We are thinking of putting nonporous wall tile on walls in our kitchen ... even above the stove. The tile there may get some splatter from cooking so I‘m wondering how difficult is it to clan a nonporous tile? I am assuming it is fairly easy, but would love to hear what the community thinks.
- Nonporous tile is very easy to clean. You can remove grease and grime with regular dishwashing liquid...just a drop on a clean sponge. Scrub with this and wipe with a clean wet rag. I think you'll like the tiles. Nonporous tiles are a piece of cake to keep clean. -

- yes but if you get out of alignment it will show allot so make sure you start perfect also when done use unsanded grout to seal any gaps
- Q: Can I install vinyl tiles in a bathroom. Will it shift over time and look bad. How does moisture affect vinyl tiles?
- It depends on the surface you put them on and the quality of the tiles. In most cases, with cheap peel and stick tiles that adhere to the surface below, they will tend to shrink, curl up at the endges and peel back after a while. It's not so much moisture as temperature changes and poor durability of the thin vinyl and poor adhesive. I'd recommend you use the Home Depot Allure line of peel and stick floating vinyl floor tile that is made by Trafficmaster. I just did a friend's bathroom with that product last weekend and was very impressed. The tiles stick to each other instead of the floor surface beneath so you can put them down over any solid surface and moisture will not effect them. They have a 25 year warranty also. At about $1.79 per square foot it is a pretty good deal and installation is a snap. We covered her entire 6' by 8' bathroom floor in less than 2 hours, including all the cuts around the toilet base and doorway. All you need to install it is a metal framing square or tee square, a sturdy pair of scissors, a measuring tape and a utility knife. Cool product. They make versions that look like tile and others that look and feel like real wood. We used the wood and it looks great. I've also used the Trafficmaster direct adhering commercial grade peel-and-stick tiles in areas that had moisture (an entryway and a powder room) with no problem but I made sure I had good birch plywood underlayment and I sealed it before laying the tile and also ran a bead of silicone caulk around the edges.

- Yes, You should use a backer board or cement board. It makes the best base so your tiles will not pop loose. When cutting backer board wear a dust mask as it is hazardous to your lungs, but use the backer board if you want the job done right. Be sure to fill in any seams with grout where you may have had to piece your board before tiling too.
- Q: I just remodeled a home and I am having a hard time cleaning the newly istalled tile. I mop and mop but the tile still looks dirty. I guess its all the powder and sand that was created by the remodeling. Am I supposed to use some type of acid or buffer?
- Sometimes when tile is installed and the water that was use to shape the joints and remove the excess grout is not changed as often as it should have been, this leaves a bloom on the tile surface. It is THIS (thin haze of grout residue) that is actually dirty not the tile. You must remove this and all will be well. Use a VERY, VERY, VERY,VERY light mixture of muriatic acid and water and clean the entire tile surface. Read and follow cautions on product label

- in my case, i like the basement to be kept dry and empty. what is so valuable about ceiling tile? you can keep them outside the house, they are part of garbage. if you want to repair the roof, buy new tile because of color matching. ceiling tile is porous and a good hiding place of germs. germs travel throughout the house from the basement because the house is warm

- Linoleum tiles will last a long time if they are put down properly. You can put over the old if there are no bad spots in them. If you'd rather pull the old up, its a long process. Make sure the floor is smooth before you put the new tile down. Use the proper glue, ask a hardware employee where your getting the tile what kind you should use. Good Luck.
