- Laptops tend to run hot because it's 10lbs of material stuffed into a 5lb sack and there is very little airflow. The higher temps cause the components to fail more quicklyEspecially hard drives. Some stuff is heatsinked to the case, so a cooling pad that pulls heat from the case can help keep the internal temps down. It was a much worse problem with older designs, though. Newer stuff has better thermal management and the processors and memory and such are much lower power which lets them run cooler. A cooling pad could potentially increase the life of the laptop, but the laptop will likely be obsolete before long before it suffers thermal failure. For a hard surface like a desk or table it may be better to just let it sit on its little legs. A lap desk is a good idea for actual lap usage and some even come with fans that can plug into the laptop.
