Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.
The earliest citation given in the Oxford English Dictionary for any word used as a name for this element is alumium, which British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy employed in 1808 for the metal he was trying to isolate electrolytically from the mineral alumina. The citation is from the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London: "Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."
Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."[69] But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."
The -ium suffix conformed to the precedent set in other newly discovered elements of the time: potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium (all of which Davy isolated himself). Nevertheless, -um spellings for elements were not unknown at the time, as for example platinum, known to Europeans since the 16th century, molybdenum, discovered in 1778, and tantalum, discovered in 1802. The -um suffix is consistent with the universal spelling alumina for the oxide (as opposed to aluminia), as lanthana is the oxide of lanthanum, and magnesia, ceria, and thoria are the oxides of magnesium, cerium, and thorium respectively.
The aluminum spelling is used in the Webster's Dictionary of 1828. In his advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal in 1892, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents[58] he filed between 1886 and 1903. It has consequently been suggested[by whom?] that the spelling reflects an easier-to-pronounce word with one fewer syllable, or that the spelling on the flyer was a mistake.[citation needed] Hall's domination of production of the metal ensured that aluminum became the standard English spelling in North America.
- Q: Do you have a recipe that it would be inexpensive and good?
- This may sound a little weird.put it in a bowl with Coke.(Coca Cola, Pepsi.whatever) for 1 day or night.it looks really good after.
- Q: The last few weeks I have seen bright flashes in the skyThen, last night an alien was digging a hole in my backyardI asked whats up? he said he was getting ready for the lightning so he could be transported to a human disintegration tripodshould I do something?
- Well from what it sounds, you guys moving to an apartment could be a pretty good thingIt will be good to save up as much money as possible and try to get back on your feetYou daughter might find some new friends in the apartment complexYou guys might, also! Now you will have to be more aware about how much noise your makingLoud music and tv can be a big issue to neighbors, so make sure to keep these things off the floor, and on tables or somethingTry not to be too loud such as yelling or anythingDon't run alot or stomp! Your daughter is 6 though, she is probably small enough to where it won't really matterIf you're going to have alot of people over, go to your downstairs and upstairs neighbors and tell them or leave a note This is respectful, and if they have any complaints of you guys in the future, they are less likely to report itIf it is reported, your land lord will just call you, so its not really a big deal unless it is happening all the time I think its a good decision for you guys to move to the apartmentIts always good to take a little break and get yourselves back on your feet! Good luck:)
- Q: for these elements:1.flourine2.phosphorous3.calcium4.nitrogen5.iron6.argon7.potassium8.helium9.magnesium10.sulfur11.lithium12.zinc13.carbon14.iodine15.oxygen16.barium17.aluminum18.hydrogen19.xenon20 pperand can someone please explain all this to me?! i am not trying to cheat on my homework but i got a 74 on my report card and i want to raise my grade upi just need to understand this please! tnahx so much
- I am not doing them all for you I will talk you though an example: Ca 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, Shells of electrons are made from sushells (s,p,d,f) s subshell holds 2 electrons, p holds 6 electrons and d holds 10 the first shell only contains an s orbital so the maximum number of electrons in the first shell is 2 The second has s+p 2+6 8 The 3rd has s+p+d 18 The tricky thing here is that the 4s orbital fill before the 3d subshell
- Q: So I just saw a commercial for zip-lock bags that are made of less plastic and using wind energyThere is also a Reynolds wrap aluminum foil that is also more greenMy question is if both the quot;greenerquot; product and the original are of equal quality why do they make bothThis also goes for the cleanersI think that if we really want to make a change for a better earth that companies if they find a greener better way to make the product then they should just sell the quot;greenerquot; productOther wise you give people a choice and they will think that the quot;greenerquot; product is not as goodSo the question is if they are equal why make both?
- Thats a great question and I never really thought about itThe green products are more expensive - i don't know if it costs more to make them or not, but if based on volume, they probably sell less of the green, thus making the price higherBut, I could be wrongIf the green product does cost more, then they are offering both products in order to stay competitive with other manufacturers, while at the same time offering you a choice.
- Q: AA machine shop worker records the mass of an aluminum cube as 176 gIf one side of the cube measures 4cm, what is the density of aluminum?bA hold bar 20 cm by 5cm by 5cm has a mass of 9.7 kgWhat is the density of gold explain your answer in g/cm^3c, which metal is denser?
- Quite a bit less than the density of people who try to cheat on their homework by asking other people for the answers.
- Q: I don't have wax paper, but I don't want to ruin the chocolate-dipped pineapple I'm making tomorrowWill it dry ok on a regular plate or aluminum foil?
- you need to strip the insulation where the elements connect to each other and to the coax cable.
- Q: A. a rare isotope of aluminumB.an element predicted to have properties similar to aluminumC.a compound that contains aluminumD. a mixture of aluminum and an unknown element Please help amp; Thanks in advance :)
- B is the answer. Eka- is the Sanskrit term for first, and eka-aluminium was the description Mendeleev gave to an undiscovered element he predicted would come in the same chemical group as aluminium, and be the first after aluminium in that group. He also predicted that the properties would be very similar to aluminium, and even went so far as to predict numerical values for density, melting and boiling points, and the stoichiometry of the oxide and chloride. He was correct (or very close to correct) on his predictions.
- Q: things like: the toxicity levels of all grades 1-7 leaching, heat and cold impact, recycability, safety in disposal
- Plastic food containers can not be made from recycled plasticPlastic used does not leach, and is not toxic, they do not react with the body.Recyclability depends on your area and what they acceptAll can be if there is a buyer. They can be buried in a landfill with little happening to them for hundreds of yearsWhen cooled, some crackWhen heated they do melt and burn and then can leachIt is not good to reheat in the microwave, left overs stored in plastics.
- Q: Whenever i make cheesecake, the top always cracks and while the cake is good, it doesn't look goodDoes anyone know any remedies to keep the top from cracking?
- you need to have them in a water bathuse a tight spring form pan lined with parchmentcover the outside with aluminum foil and set the cheesecake in a larger metal pan that has water in it and bake it that waythe water bath makes a steam in the oven and keeps the cheesecake from drying out and cracking.
- Q: Does anyone know the way to clean silver that you line a container with foil and add a liquid of some kind to,?
- I am not really crazy about this methodIt takes all the detail out of the piece by cleaning out the little black areas that highlight the detailsThat said, if you still want to do it, you line a pan with aluminum foil or a piece of magnesium, add baking soda and hot water and dunk the piece in a way that it touches the aluminum foil.
