Q: a few tiles are cracked near the sink. How can i fix it temporarily ( is it worth it?) or should i replace the tiles or the whole thing? how would i go about doing that?
You need to chip out the grout and cracked tile, and replace them, if you can find an exact match, otherwise replace them all on that side, then you can either match it to the other side or use another color, or style, like if you have four inch tiles on the remaining side, use subway (rectangular) tiles on the sink side. or go for an checkerboard with square tile in white and an accent color.
Q: OK here is my problem. I want to switch my bath tub to an all-tile shower and wonder how to do it. So far the tile were set onto a cement board that was itself put on top of the drywall. I am wondering if this is a common thing. From all my research, it looks like tile should be on the cement board, but there is no use for extra drywall behind it. It actually makes things tougher because you need some sort of corner tile instead of normal bullnose since the cement board and the rest of the wall are not at the same level. My second question is: is there an order to do all this i.e. should I make the shower pan (sort of rubber sheet filled with cement), before or after I install the cement board on the wall. Is there a specific angle used for the drain? Thanks in advance for all your tips.
Tile looks great but is a real problem to keep mildew free. We lived in Houston for 20 years and had a tiled shower, it was a constant battle. We now have a cultured marble shower. Mildew is not a problem. I would not have any other type of shower. It is always clean and just a little spray with one of those new spray products and there is no soap scum to deal with either. It is less likely to have leak problems as well. If you are going to live in the house for a while, go with the cultured marble.
Q: Suppose you have three types of tile: red tiles, which are 1x1, bluetiles which are 1 x1, and green tiles which are 1 x 2. Let tn be the number of ways to lineup these tiles to form a 1 x n line. Such a con guration is called atiling of a 1 x n board. Determine (and justify) a recurrence relation for tn, and use yourrecurrence to compute t9.
to build a line of length n, andd a green tile to the right of a line of length n-2 or add either a red or blue tile to the rihgt of a line of length n-1 f(n) = f(n-2) + 2f(n-1) f(0) = 1 (there is 1 way to make a line of length 0: use no tiles) f(1)=2 f(2) = 5 f(3) = 12 f(4) = 29 f(6) = 70 f*6( = 169 f(7) = 409 f(8) = 985 f(9) = 2379
Q: The tile at the store says $5.00 per square foot.. so I'm assuming that's the cost of the tile only.. and then how much does it generally cost to install? Another $5 or more per square foot? I am new to this all.
$ 4.00 - $ 6.00 per sq ft installed......includes grouting.....but no material, pay for all material.... lic. gen. contractor
Q: If you were going to tile an entire room would you start from the walls or floor? The room is only small 12m walls amp; 4m floor amp; is a basic toilet amp; basin. There are no border tiles amp; no fllor to wall tiles.

Q: Is it good to use a white cement?
Glove ingredients are white cement and trace amounts of polymer, pigment composition; white whiteness of about 86%, the surface strength is slightly higher than white cement. White cement color is single, divided into ordinary white cement and decorative white cement, the former strength is slightly higher, the brightness of about 80%, the latter strength is low, the whiteness of about 84%; in short white cement low whiteness, paste strength Low, the phenomenon of serious powder, brick prone to yellow dirty, in the wet environment is the breeding ground, direct hook a wide gap will produce a lot of cracks, the only advantage is the low price. As the white cement waterproof performance, scrub resistance to be worse, so the home decoration process, in the kitchen and toilet wall, living room floor tiles generally do not use, now basically choose a professional tile tucker. Gouge agent with color changeable, mildew, the highest degree of adhesion, will not fall off, easy to clean, clean and most convenient, the shortcomings of the market is rare, need to buy their own owners, and the price is higher than the white cement. So when paving tiles in accordance with their own needs to buy the right tiles to fill products.
Q: I have to remove the old tiles and install new ones. Please can someone who does this for a living guide me in the right direction?
Remove the old tile and dry wall or what ever wall board is behind the tile, put up a vapor barrier, reset a cement board product and tile. Tile with a thin set , never a mastic in this type of area. This is a general guide to the basics, you need more specifics, since its to much detail to go in here...E mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I am putting in a wood stove and want to make a mural behind it - should I tile the board and then put it up, or tile it on the wall. I am using wall spacers and cement board. I want to make a mural of a tree - the wall is 8‘ by 3‘ - should I cover the whole wall or just the part behind the wood stove? do I need special grout?thanks for your answers
You have to install the board directly to wall studs using threaded fasteners, (screws)... Distance from wall to double wall flue pipe can be as little as 1 according to CABO 1 2 Family dwelling codes. i.e. 1 from studs... As far as grout goes, nothing special is made that I know of for such situations. Where we have tile above fireplace, the tile contractor uses the same adhesive and grout as goes in the bathroom floor... I would reccomend if possible that the distance between single wall flue pipe and the wall be at least 6 and the best might be one foot... Don't forget there is slight radient heat in single wall if the stove gets hot enough to glow, otherwise it is conduction heat which can only be transfered by contact with objects...
Q: I installed tile couple of days ago in my shower. I was wondering isn't it better to put bathroom caulking instead of grout since it is flexible and it will last longer and provide better water resistance. Does grout make tile stronger or is caulking only applied on edges? Would I make mistake if I used bathroom caulking between tiles? Thanks
I'd use grout. It's designed for this job, and last forever. I once lived in a house that was built in about 1929. 50+ years later, most of the grout was good, but the caulk that the landlord had put around the edge of the tub 2 years before was failing. Grout it - and don't use the cheap stuff.
Q: I have several boxes of wall tile and I would like to use some on a floor. Is this okay? What is the difference?
No because when wall tile gets wet it gets very slipery. You would be creating an ice scating rink.
