Q: I've seen a couple homes around my town that have solar power and I live in the Desert, where the sun is shinning and it gets really hot during the summer. We run our air conditioner a lot making our electricity bill high.So I just wanted to know if anyone has or knows anyone that has solar panels? are they worth getting and is it the same as having electricity?
Solar electricity is electricity, it is just coming from a clean source rather than coal or oil burning generators. The solar panels make DC power, and the inverter converts it to AC and syncs it up with the electricity you buy from the electric company, it all goes into the same pool, there is no difference between them. gr8sk8rgold - Yes, you are right, installing a large solar system on your house can cost as much as a luxury car. What's the return on investment on that car? How has that car improved the environment? People never ask what the ROI is on anything they buy for their house, except for the solar system. Not sure why. However, the return varies greatly depending on where you live. In some European countries, feed-in-tariffs made the return almost immediate. Ontario, Canada just launched a program that can make a solar system earn you money. In the USA, the federal gov't will give you a 30% tax credit on the installed cost, and some states have rebates and incentives that can pay for a large percentage of the system. If you are building a new house and roll the cost into the mortgage, it'll barely change the monthly payments. You should absolutely first invest in conservation. It is much cheaper to save electricity than to make it. For every $ you spend on conservation, that's about $4 less to spend on solar.
Q: Can solar panels store excess energy?
No, solar panels cannot store excess energy.
Q: What in the solar panel wares out so that the panel can not convert the suns energy to electric energy? Please post were you get answers.
The plastic covering degrades slowly and becomes more opaque, The metal current carrying parts corrodes over time. The metal frames corrode but can be repaired. The photovoltaic cells also degrade over time from exposure to ozone and heat that builds up in the panel.
Q: I recently got into solar panels, I have little background in electronics but I have done a little electrical work in the past and just want to make a small 36 cell panel to power a 2v battery that would run my a small tv (9 inch) and PS3 for a few hours every night. I have been looking up on how to do it before I get in over my head and I have a few questions.... After you solder all of the cells together then what? Do you hook all of the rows of cells together somehow? Can you connect them straight to a battery? After you hook to the battery do you hook up a power inverter to get the 2 AC plugs that would be needed? Thanks in advance for any help....
I'll add a few comments to Teelo's It may not be good to connect the assembled solar cells directly to the battery. When there is no sun I think it will drain the battery. I'm pretty sure all circuits I have seen have a reverse polarity diode in series. (unless Teelo knows for sure). Hmmm Reminds me that I have some bare solar cell elements from when Motorola was making them. I used some to power a small radio controlled car. I do know that all good applications have a regulator to make sure the charging is done properly
Q: How long does it take to recoup the cost of solar panels through energy savings?
The time it takes to recoup the cost of solar panels through energy savings varies depending on factors such as the cost of the panels, the amount of sunlight in the area, the energy consumption of the household, and available government incentives. On average, it can take anywhere between 5 to 20 years to recoup the initial investment. However, with technological advancements and decreasing costs of solar panels, this payback period is steadily decreasing, making solar energy an increasingly attractive and financially viable option for many homeowners.
Q: Installing solar panels requires a big initial investment. Before I make this investment I want to check to see if the money I will save by installing solar panels will actually pay for this investment, in the long run. To calculate my savings, we should consider the area (square feet) I currently have available to install solar panels. Look at the available sunlight and its intensity in my state each month of the year. Based on this data estimate how much energy my solar panel will generate. Then compare that with how much energy (kWh) I currently consume based on my electricity bill.
Your school spend $0,000 per month or per year?? Photovoltaic (Solar Panel) panels have a really large initial capital investment. If you live in a location (e.g. West Coast Desert, SoCal) where there are many sunny days so you might be able to break even quicker. Also note ,there are state and federal grants that can help ease the capital cost. Energy demand keeps going up so expect our current rates to double. People who have alternative forms like wind and solar will have the advantage when this time comes. Just think of when the US had it's oil crisis in summer of 2008, people with small efficient vehicles such as Prius's didn't feel the price increase like the people who bought cheaper large SUV's.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on carports or other structures?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on carports or other structures. In fact, carports and other structures can provide ideal locations for solar panel installation as they offer a suitable space to mount panels and can provide shade and protection for vehicles or other objects underneath. This allows for dual functionality and maximizes the use of available space for generating renewable energy.
Q: Are solar panels affected by shade?
Yes, solar panels are affected by shade. Shading can significantly reduce the efficiency and overall energy production of solar panels. It is important to ensure that solar panels are installed in areas with minimal shade to maximize their performance.
Q: I am intrested in buying solar panels to save a buck and even maek some money off of it but I was wondering what kind? How Much? How Many? Are they easy to install? Whats the best brand? I want alot of information on this if anyone can give me some help on it in a user friendly way it would be appreciated!
You will not recoup your cost in utilities savings. you will get it back in state and federal tax credits and accelerated depreciation on the system. You also have to be aware that a KV system for example is different in different climates. I just priced a system that is in Malibu,CA and it is very efficient due to sun exposure. the same system in Idaho will not create the same amount of power output. Therefore will not save the same amount on utilities. I have included a plug and play system that just came on the market. But there are other systems available.
Q: How much electricity can a solar panel generate?
The amount of electricity a solar panel can generate depends on factors such as its size, efficiency, location, and weather conditions. On average, a standard residential solar panel can generate around 250 to 400 watts per hour under optimal conditions. However, it is important to note that solar panels are typically installed in arrays, so the total electricity generation can be scaled up by adding more panels.
