Q: I was wondering if anyone knows what period this book is set in? I know that it's set in the slums of New York and the story was published in 1893. But what time period does the story actually take place?
I studied in in university - it's contemporary to when it was written, so it may as well be set in 1893. Crane was in his early 20's when he wrote it. He was addressing a societal issues of the day, particularly living in the slums of New York and the shift in American culture/economy from primarily agricultural to industrial. It addressed poverty, disaease, social ills and the dreariness of poor city life. The book was quite controversial when it first came out.
Q: Which Kung Fu influenced Shotokan, Shito-ryu and Shorin-ryu?
Chinese Martial Arts influenced the development of Karate in Okinawa, not Japan. So any influence in Japanese styles like Shotokan are a little more removed from that origin. Shotokan was brought to Japan by Gichen Funakoshi, so many people would argue that it is a Okinawan style...... However the Karate that Funakoshi learned and taught in Okinawa is far different from how Shotokan appears now. In Funakoshi's books fro the early 1900's he is always shown standing in a high stance with his feet close together. But Shotokan as practiced by the Japanese uses mainly lower deeper stances. Shorin-Ryu is not really just one version/style. There are several different versions of the style. for instance the three most practiced are: Shobayashi-Shorin-Ryu, Kobayashi-Shorin-Ryu, and Matsubayashi-Shorin-Ryu. There are also other lesser know styles of Shorin-Ryu. Although these all share some things they are all different in some ways. It would take a bit of research to look up all the styles that have influenced them. The same can be said for Shito-Ryu. Like Shorin-Ryu, it also has several versions. One of the best books that gives the lineage of Okinawan styles is called Okinawan Karate, teachers, styles and secret techniques. The book was written by Mark bishop. It has been one of the most useful books in tracing down things about Okinawa Karate and from what it developed. ...
Q: I'm into urban exploration and basically the one thing I haven't done is climb a crane. I don't actually know where one is that I could climb, but I definitely will do it someday. I'm just wondering how illegal it would be? Also, don't give me any it's not safe bull, I'm perfectly confident in my abilities and ready to accept the consequences if I get caught.
Not at all if you don't get caught. However cranes are private property, you'll get your a.ss handed to you if you get caught.

Q: my HSAP prep teacher wants us to find instructions on how to make an oragami crane. She said that it has to be less than 24 steps.I have looked on the internet and I cannot find anything.I need this by tomorrow. Please help!
Start with a square piece of paper. You got that? Fold the paper corner to corner to get a large right triangle, and fold it corner to corner again to get a smaller triangle. You got that ,or did I lose you. Open the paper, and you will see a big X. Never mind the X. We will come back to it. Now fold the paper side to side to get a rectangle, and fold the two SHORT SIDES to the X fold. Open and do the other two by repeating what you just did. Open the paper FLAT. You can now see a 4 pointed star. Along the four sides of the square, push down on the perimeter of the star to make the star come up. Fold down until you have a flat KITE. Make sure you have 2 flaps on each side. What you are looking at now is one wing, and the other one is in the back. The neck and head are inside the wings. Pull them out half way to expose them. Fold one side at the tip to make a head. If you did everything correctly, and hold under the neck with one hand and pull the tail with the other hand, the crane should flap its wing. Write back if you need more help.
Q: I'm getting a tattoo of a paper crane in about 2 weeks because to me it symbolizes creativity and an artistic talent. I dont want it to look like any other paper crane tattoo though and I have been having issues coming up with a small design to add into the tattoo. I have always loved art but will unfortunately will not be continuing my education of it because it is very difficult to get a job in the art field. All in all, i'm looking for help for adding a design in the paper crane tattoo that will represent the artist that I am.
Hey okorder / I reckon the Japanese tradition would really suit this style because of the crane is a Japanese form of art. I do give you permission to print out this piece and work with it as this is only a basic sketch and ive stuffed up a lot of the detail as I forgot it would be easier for you with just an outline also the top flower may need re-doing. I hoped I helped.

Q: A site would be nice...
For themes, I wrote Fast Rode the Knight, written by Stephen Crane, is a short poem about a knight going into battle, and his forgotten horse. Some themes in this poem are love and devotion, battles in war, the passion that drives the soldiers, or knights, into it, the forgotten aftermath of the battles, and what has to be left behind for such a battle to be fought. The passion of the knight can be found in the lines Ever waving an eager sword/’To save my lady!’. The knight rides at a furious pace, driven by love and a blinding devotion to his love, or perhaps his Ruling Lady. thats just like the beginning, hope it can help you :D It's not nearly finished, but hope it is okay all the same :)
