- the most important thing is to have the lines parallel to the walls and to make sure that you do not have any small pieces of tile near any walls or cabinets. If you don't like math you should lay the tiles out on the floor and see how the lay-out works. Every minute that you spend on a good layout will pay off in the end and make finishing easier.

- If water can get behind them, it probably has. I suggest you take the tiles down ASAP. Water in a bathroom can cause MOLD. Depending on your state, if it is moldy back there you can hold the previous owner's responsible. Don't risk your health!

- Q: I am planning on laying some tile today but not sure when it can be walked on. Also, can I lay some today and start again tomorrow? It is in a small bathroom.
- The mortar for tile usually dries in 24 hours and the tile should not be walked on until it dries or the tiles can move. Laying tile can be done over a period of time as long as you don't extend the mortar into the untiled area when you stop. It will harden and you would need to chip it off to start the next part of the job.

- Technically this is not the best way to do it, but I did this at my last house and it was a hell of lot easier then tearing up the floor and having to put boards underneath and then tile. I would recommend just tiling the vinyl if the floor is 100% level.

- absolutely not!.....first there are easier ways to tile a backsplash other than cement board, grout, and mud (you know, the stuff contractors use).First, figure out your tile. Make sure that if this tile will come in contact with a lot of oil or dirt that you either get glazed tile or glass tile, or know that you will have to apply a sealer. Second, go to your local Lowes, Home Depot, etc and ask the tile dept guy or girl about tile mastic......it is a thin coat of stuff that you can stick tile to and then use a pre made tube of grout (ask the tile person) and you can have it done in a couple of hours. Another really easy way to stick up tile permanently is using a product called 'Liquid Nails' that is made for tile......you just use a caulking gun, put some on the tile, and stick away!.....then fill the cracks with the toothpaste looking tube of grout. - I've heard slate tiles are good, especially for heat conduction. Many people use them on top of sand to reduce the risk of sand ingestion and impaction.
- Q: Specifically, what type of drill bit is required that won‘t chip the tile.
- Also do not rush. Slow, slow, slow drill speed and minimal pressure. Having someone spray water while you drill also helps. Getting through the gloss layer is the hardest part as drill will want to slide. The tile bits you purchase at store will wear out after a few holes so keep fresh ones handy.
