- Hey Marie.....light travels in wavelegnths much like the waves of an ocean travelling to the shore. When something interrupts or alters the course of these wavelegnths (such as light travelling through a prism) then these wavelengths (ripples) must do a detour and this is called refraction (not to be confused with reflection). It is the same reason that we sometimes see a rainbow in different mediums. Each waverlegnth of light actually has a corresponding color to it.....hence the rainbow. A Frenchman named Fresnel figured out some fancy mathematical equations to explain all of this and when you see an old lighthouse up close you will see the fresnel lens that it supports. It uses this theory so as to take a small light source indide if it (such as an old whale oil lamp) and then magnify and refract the light into a seemingly brighter appearance. Light can bend (refract) and when it does this then corresponding colors appear due to a change in wavelegnth (it makes a detour) and the intensity of the light may appear greater or smaller.

- there are a few ways to light a person and various types of lighting. you can use a hot light and move it around the person until you get the lighting you want. with a hot light you can light from the sides, behind, over head or even directly in front, but for that make sure the lighting is coming from behind the camera so its not in the way. be careful of the position of the lighting because if it is in the path of the camera lens there may be a light flare. you can also use a soft box as well. it diffuses the lights so that they are not as harsh as the hot light. the hot light shows the details, flaws and all. the soft light hides it more while still showing off the facial features. also be careful of where you are standing because if you are in white, you'll be your own reflector. you can use reflectors to bounce like onto the subject. things like a mirror or aluminum foil would be cheap and easy. well good luck

- That's a great question. it's those types of questions which lead Einstein to realize the general theory of relativity. You see no matter from what perspective the speed of light is measured, now focus on this, it is always measured as the same. Remember that speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a certain amount of time, or Distance/Time. So one person in a stationary car will measure the speed of light to be 299,792,458, but someone in a car moving at a rate of 100 meters/sec would measure the speed of light as the SAME. HOW IS THIS? This was completly bafeling to scientists, they didnt know how to explain this. Well since we would normally expect the person in the moving car to register the speed of light as either +100 m/s or -100 m/s depending on which way the car is going, either towards the light or away. But since we measure the speed of light as the same or basically that the viewers disagree on how far the light has traveled. Since they disagree on how far the light has traveled or distance, then the only way to balance the equation is that they disagree on the time that it took. - The difference comes in the spectra of light emitted by the bulbs. - Mine is usually dark on top and lighter on the bottom. I color my hair mahogany brown, and the red in it really shows closer to the ends. Of course, when my grays start coming back it's anyone's guess!! :(

- Gels are only really necessary if your 3 light sources are different coloured light for example tungsten and daylight fluorescent. Then you would gel the light that is different to make them all daylight. Gelling for effect i.e. a warmer light you would gel all the lights, but you can do this globally in the video editor more easily. Gelling just one light for effect normally just looks odd, the real answer is to try it, but normally you want to work with all lights at the same colour temperature, daylight is best as then any natural light through a window would blend in. You can gel the background lights to create a mood, cooler or warmer or just for a colour splash maybe shone through a 'biscuit' to cast an interesting shadow (potted plants work well), but normally you want daylight balanced light on your subjects or skin tones start to look odd. - Hench the word Fog... The light is used for the fog. But yes they can be used in relatively dark places. They are aimed more toward the road, because fog is in the air rather then the ground.. It helps to light more ground area up
